Inside view of the Government
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:10:45 AM »
So my lady friend (recent emaw graduate) works as a city planner for a local government.

In between chatting with friends and watching hulu for hours at a time she estimates she actually works about 2 hours a day. She doesnt want to ask her boss for more work because she's afraid he will realize how little time she actaully spends working.

When I asked her why they hired her if they didnt have any work for her to do she said "Well they if they didnt staff the position they would lose that money in their budget".

Granted she has a masters and is good at her job so she probably gets the work done quicker than the last person they had. At the same time I cant imagine a company in the private sector keeping someone around at full salary and benefits if they only really work about 2 hours a day.

Gotta love the government. I can only image what goes on at a federal level....

You see this all the time in the private sector.  I've had jobs where I probably only did 2 full hours of work in an 8 hour day.  I'm busier now, but I see plenty of people like this at my company, despite going through lik 4 rounds of layoffs in the last couple of years.

That describe 99% of the working public, not just gov't bro.  If you're still in college, you'll figure that out pretty quick.

Graduated bra, and working in the real world. Difference is my money is taken from me without my consent and spent on a job that isnt necessary. Completely different if I voluntarily spend the money on a product that is supported by people working 2 hours a day.

So i'm guessing that 2 hours of work really must not be that important then, right?
Where did you get that overnight bag?

She goes on "sign runs" at least once a week. By "Sign run" I mean she drives around and picks up those cheap garage sale signs on the side of the road that say "Lose 40lbs in 2 weeks!" "Stay at home mom makes 100k" "Lawn and Leaf care".

That's the norm for government jobs.  No joke.  I've known several people who quit their super cushy government jobs because they ran out of ideas of things to invent for themselves to do and were simply bored out of their minds.  The part about spending money in the budget so that you don't lose it the next year is the norm, too.  That's just how the government functions.  I've seriously heard all of those exact things from people who experienced it first hand many, many times before.

But none of that has anything to do with politics.

Absolutely not but I do think the city could put that service up for bid and save thousands.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting that you might get fired.  Didn't ask about the book.  I am not a reporter or private investigator or anything like that.
