NYC requires trade-offs.

The first time I came out to visit NYC, I knew I wanted to live here.  Here you'll find more action, ethnic diversity, opportunity and intellectual stimulation than any other place in the U.S.(the world?).  Maybe I was just a sheltered kid, but in my personal experience, it seems people from NYC have much broader horizons in terms of what they consider possible to accomplish/do.  Also, you've got models, musicians, fashonistas and "scenes" if you're into that (which can be fun).  And the best beaches in the U.S. are in the Hamptons, according to a 2010 survey.  I can't even imagine owning a car anymore -- you can get anywhere by public transportation.

OTOH, you have to be willing to pay for this (literally) and put up with crowds, rude people, no lawn, grime and graffiti (which I actually like), long waits, and small expensive apartments DEFINITELY.

To me, it's worth it.  I understand it's not for everyone, though.

Raking leaves is the worst.  Reason enough to move to NYC?  Maybe.

Or just pay $75 a year to have a lawn care service company take care of it. :dunno:

City AND state taxes are high.  I personally think the services we get are worth it, though.

A friend of mine bought a beautiful house in Connecticut to avoid the taxes and kept his rental apartment in NYC.  He gave up the NYC apartment after a year or so, but he and his wife were so bored they had to rent a NYC apartment again and "move" back to the City (still a CT resident if Uncle Sam asks).  Point is: the taxes are bad, but living in the City wins in the end.

Was what I was thinking. You want stuff to do, you gotta be willing to pay for it.

You turds just wait til I report on my walking distance apartment to Hyvee, Olive Garden, Walgreens, Petco, Best Buy and The Chef.  You will be like "NYC sucks, I wish I was in MHK."

Me?  I'll be all like ":gocho:"

If I really wanted to go to NYC, I'd fly to Chicago for a dog and a brew then be there....SAME DAY.

Love how many people in NY act like NY is the only place you conceivably do anything fun.

Know what's missing?  College football.   The real kind, not 9th-tier bowl games played in pro baseball stadiums.  Also missing?  People who actually give a crap about college sports.  I hear SUNY-Stony Brook is gonna have an awesome team this year, though.

FWIW, I would absolutely love to go to the Steinbrenner Bowl or whatever it's called this year, though.

If you're a hick.  If you are a cosmopolitan city-dweller it is reasonable and enjoyable in all seasons.

Or just pay $75 a year to have a lawn care service company take care of it. :dunno:

Good lord who has time to do all that crappy stuff in NYC, when I'm here breathing my fresh air, enjoying the sounds of nature and counting the stars at night.  Gosh it's great to live in the country.

Hey, I said it's not for everyone.  The things I miss most are backyard BBQs and being in the outdoors on fall Saturdays.

Wouldn't this be like the best hipster restaurant ever?  Get a place in brooklyn, build a patio, sod the crap out of it (would have to replace weekly), have picnic tables and grills + coolers of beer.  Restaurant sells the meat, the beer, sides.

Don't forget to add ironic aprons for the cooks to wear. This is actually a trend in the city now. East River Bar in Williamsburg does this - you bring your own meat though.

The beer gardens in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan are somewhat similar and a real good time. If I had my druthers I'd open a few in other spots in the US.

You know what would be in my lawn if my house was in NYC?  3 more houses......and it would be glorious.

Add in a 1950-80's theme with a bouncer at the front door checking your appropriately ironic/nostalgic dress (a big heavy red door with a mail slot and you have to ring the doorbell and get passed "dad" to get in.)

have a bro that just moved to nyc he's always "going to tom petty tonight" or "catching pearl jam at the garden" or "just ate at the restaurant seinfeld was taped at" or "curb is taping in my hood today" or "just ate at halal cart" it's just non-stop, I don't think you can live there and be bored. Plus I would LOVE to not have to drive anywhere, driving is a huge waste of time, think of how much more bbsing you could do if you could just catch the a-train?

It's impossible to downplay New York. Impossible. I mean, every street smells like roasted nuts. It just makes me want to punch a Canadian in the face and then buy them a half smoke.
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

Things you love about NYC that don't get enough press:
-crazy electronic store bodegas.  I mean, yeah, I'm going down to the corner to buy a laptop and an HD camcorder.
-restaurants that you wouldn't know were there unless you were told or directed to them.  Just walk right by without even seeing them.
-normal non-homeless people taking naps in public.
-crazy rules on when to walk and when not to.  sometimes the street is completely clear but I don't walk because the locals don't.  then, sometimes, it's busy as eff and a red light and I'm walking because the locals are.  just follow them, i haven't died yet.
-the traffic lanes are not even a suggestion.  People will turn a 2 lane into a 4 lane at 50 mph for the entire day.  police car right next to the cab and they don't GAF.  pretty great.
-guys selling their underground rap albums for $5.  I am going to buy one someday to check it out.
