Awkward Reunions
« on: January 21, 2012, 11:13:26 PM »
So, yesterday, I go to the pediatrician with my wife and new son for a standard check up thing.  I'm in the waiting room, chasing my other son around, and I see a girl checking in at the reception desk that looks really familiar to an ex-girlfriend from back in college.  I haven't talked to her in about ten years, so obviously, I'm not 100% sure it's her.  However, a while back, some friends of mine brought her up in a conversation and said she married some guy named [redacted].  I overhear her checking in, and lo and behold, it's that same name.  I take a quick glance again, and well, it's her with her baby.

A few minutes later, she sees me, I see her, and you get that really awkward look like, "Hey, aren't you...?"  But, obviously, neither of us approached the other because, well, I'm not about to have that conversation in my child's pediatrician's office with my wife sitting right there.

Anyway, I kind of felt guilty about it later, and I thought I should have said something so as not to be extremely rude (since I dumped her), but really, all I could think of was, "Kids huh?  Welp, see you later."

I'm just wondering if any other goEMAWers have a similar experience.

I should have done that.  Upset that I didn't.  However, my hormonally charged wife in the room may have made that exchange a little more problematic.

if your wife is hotter, you should have made the effort otherwise, no.
Sometimes I think of the Book of Job and how God likes to really eff with people.

Yep, smile and mouth "Hi"

She obviously moved on and did okay with her life. No reason for it to be awkward.

your wife would get mad if you said hi to someone you used to date?

Very good question.  If the answer is yes, you should leave her now because it will probably only get worse.

I'm calling bullshit.  He's trying to use his wife as an excuse for acting like a socially awkward boob in perfectly normal situation.  :dubious:

Probably this.

I'm also going to throw the curveball that she had a different hair color and looked kind of different.  Would have also included the awkward, "Arent you so and so?" moment.

I'm already sure that I made the wrong move here.

That's nothing. One time I was working a table at a college fair for high schoolers and one of the teachers was a girl I fooled around with in the back seat of a car when we were 16. :mancard:

The key to relationships is making your partner constantly jealous or worried about other women.

You should of asked if she was a single mother, tilted your head to the side and said, "Poor thing".

I normally grab my wife's shoulder and say don't look, but there's an old girlfriend, to which she usually replies as loud as she can: "WHO?!? Who are you trying to avoid?!?"  you'd think I'd learn and not say that crap - but I always do.

I recently pointed out a college crush (accompanied by her hubby and new kid) to the gf at a party. It's not like I'm still trying to hook up with her a decade later. The fact that the gf understands this speaks to why she's the gf. We're all adults here, let's recognize the past is the past, and the now is the now.

Different situation: what do you do when you run into someone you used to see or work with all the time, but you haven't seen him in a while. You remember their name clearly and greet them, then talk a little bit, and it becomes clear that they don't remember your name? This could be avoided by greeting them with something like, "Hey, Tom! John Smith, from K-State...how's it going?" But some folks fall in a gray area, where you don't want to insult them by offering your name as if you assume they wouldn't remember. Last time this happened to me, I concluded afterwards that I should have given the guy one of my cards with the "call me up and let's get lunch sometime," or something similar, as we wrapped things up.

Happens all the time. The key is too act really happy no matter the situation and be overly nice. Whether things are going well or not, they always walk away thinking: "Damn he seemed like he was doing really well". But i'm not married with kids so it might be a tad bit different for me when I run into an ex.
