Casino Frank
« on: January 19, 2012, 01:11:28 AM »
I love Frank, but I'm worried.  Every year it seems Frank breaks the team down after a lackluster showing, so far every year the team has responded positively.  18-22 year old kids respond in all directions, tonight I believed that we would play hard and win, but what if the team said a collective "eff you Frank" and layed down?  It could have been a turning point in Franks career, If he lost the team tonight and went on to a 8-11 big12 record followed by transfers of Angel, Diaz, and Gip what then?  All I am saying is when you poke your finger in the chest of a 20 yr. old, you don't know how they will respond.  If it is positive, good for you Frank.  If there is mutiny aboard the "goodship wildcat" your potty mouth could be lookin' for a job.  To me it just doesn't seem like the type of gamble Frank should take after we make some silly mistakes and lose to the fourth ranked team in the nation.  If this is going to be Franks mo year after year it is bound to backfire and after going 4 for his first 4 sooner rather than later.

If the kids give up that's on the players. As much Frank has been portrayed as a hardass, it should be no surprise that he's a hardass to the recruits.

If you think his persona is killing recruiting, that could be. But you can't blame his methods if kids bail.

I'm only worried that if he has a team quit on him one time after over-playing his hand he might get rolled up under the bus.  :ohno:

Meh.  Not worried about his treatment of the players.  They were all well aware of his persona before they ever put on a uniform.  Yeah, if the entire team formed some sort of mutiny but that crap never happens except to Angie Joile's dad.

I'm more concerned that this sacrificing games to "prove a point" and the early conference play let down trend has become expected and accepted. If there's never a season where it just comes together and players don't have to be reminded multiple times every season to buy in, then it kind of puts a ceiling on where Frank can take this team in any given year. I mean, whatever happened to letting a player play through adversity?

You guys are all part of the problem. Kids today haven't changed, its how adults handle kids and the expectations they put on kids that has changed. Its clear that Frank understands this maybe better than anyone else in the country.

Good job Frank.

This has been my meme, too. I see Frank making every season a replay of his life story. There has to be ups and downs and flirtation with the void.
He needs to conquer the demons and learn to accept good fortune.
Probably won't happen. Even with next year's squad of vets (unless McGruder goes pro), there'll be "leadership" issues or what not.

Sums up my thoughts exactly.  At some point we have to stop being OK with him "teaching lessons" in the middle of the conference season.  If it were a couple players ever few years, I could understand and appreciate that.  But when it's 2 or 3 players EVERY. rough ridin'. YEAR. he needs to realize that the common denominator is him. Get that crap out of the way before the conference opener.

as far as it effecting recruiting: There are a lot of different coaching styles in HS and AAU.  Frank represents one of those styles.  Kids will go where they feel comfy and like they have  a good shot to succeed.

It doesn't hurt us any more than if he was a super overly nice guy.  Just a style.  Kids come up under a style then seek that out in their next step.

_fan and kitten_mittons you both are spot on. Frank is Frank and dude isn't going to change his coaching style. You think the coaches are easier in the NBA? GMAFB with this soft glove coaching crap! You want Wooly back? You want a swell guy coaching this team? Not me, eff all that - give me a guy who doesn't eff around and who doesn't take any crap off of these players and IMO there will be success.
w/r to recruiting and Frank "hurting" recruiting, ask Robert Upshaw the 12th ranked player in the country what he thinks about Franks recruiting style. Stop being a complete Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) and get on board, pussies!
We are K-State and we love to hire SHlTTY coaches.

So you're saying you like Frank and you think someday he'll bring a conference championship to Manhattan, KS?

Or you're saying you like Frank and playing for second place in the conference every few years is fine with you... What more should we expect?

I could really care less about winning the conference, I just want tournament wins.  If Frank keeps us consistantly in the second round and reaches the Sweet 16/Elite 8 periodically, dude can act however the eff he wants.  (A Final Four run would buy him damn near total immunity in my eyes.)  I'm not sure this schtick will continue to work though, which is why his act is wearing thin with me.  Hope I'm wrong (and I probably am) because I love so many things about Frank, just not the yearly Frank-induced myshernias.

Yes to both. My expectation as a basketball fan is to have a program that makes postseason appearances every year, and 75-80% of those should be NCAAs. I can live with rebuilding every now and then and making the NIT in a down year. If you do that, you are going to have instances where you can compete for a league title, but I don't think its realistic to expect K-State to be a year in/year out league title contender. Now, I do expect to win games in the NCAA tournament, and every couple of years at least make it to the 2nd weekend.

I think after the Baylor game, Frank decided that "we're not there yet" and if we want to "make a run in March", I have to "break them down and build them back up".  I'm pretty sure most coaches wouldn't do this because it pretty much guaranteed a loss at Oklahoma and makes it a grind over the next few games.  But I think Frank has a big enough ego and enough backing from Currie that he isn't scared to take chances like this and lose a few conference games in order to make this team better in March.  Also, I don't the he gaf about Jo Henriquez because he's got Upshaw coming in next year and won't need a whiney upper classman that will stand up to him.

That is all.
Is that Manhattan?  My God, it's beautiful!
