I honestly can't think of another D1 program (men's or women's) that plays in a worse gym.  I mean I understand that they are going for the "historic" angle and patching every hole in the place trying to keep it afloat but enough is enough...When you consider teams like UCLA are spending millions of dollars renovating Pauley, KU can't even afford to get a new paint job on their floor.  -Let alone consider finally putting that old building out of its misery, starting over, and building something newer like the Octogon of Doom.

I wonder if the KS Board of Regents will have to force the hand of the administrators in Lawrentucky?

Hilarious that the KU fans I know are oblivious to it all.

Tourism is only good for places that tourists want to see.  No tourists = no tourism.

i heard they want to replace it with a brand spanking new douglas county civic center, but the school and local government just don't have the funds at this point.  the plans for it are amazing, though.  think sprint center on roids.

Aren't the rules for basketball there?  That must be a pretty big draw no?

i've been to a few games there. it's pretty nasty and smells. the ku people like it and pack the crap out of it though so idk. i kind of have to wonder how much better they would be with a newer/nicer place like bramlage but i'm glad they don't have the money for it honestly.

They ACT like they like it.  I know a few who will confide they think the place leaves a lot to be desired.

Without question it has an old school, "sit and quietly watch the game" atmosphere.

so is it the building that smells or the people packed into it? /philosoraptor.jpg

I imagine they don't want to give that place up for sheer embarrassment . They had to lie and steal from the American people and put countless soldier's lives at risk to get the steel to build it.

Count me as one who is very, very thankful that they don't have the money for a new gym.  DO NOT want them to have that advantage.

Word is that part of the problem is that they don't have the land available to build on.  Three sides of the campus are boxed in by low income housing, and the liberals in Douglas County will fight Immenent Domain actions on those properties, so the University has no options.

That Bob Dole building would have been perfect, but Dole would not budge.  What a dick.

Yeah, a new building on that site would almost guarantee they would catch up with Duke, UNC, Kentucky etc.

Yes, it is important to stick to the facts here, taking a dig at their fans hygiene here would not be appropriate and could distract from the matter at hand.  I grew up in Wichita and we had an old movie theatre on Douglas called  The Crest, well some people liked it, but when new theatres started being built around town that were cool, and not old and stinky, everybody perferred the new ones.  I think there is a lesson to be learned here for KU.  Can you imagine how energy inefficient that old shack is?  Hell its like little brother is single handedly trying to transfer american wealth over to the arabs.  :shakesfist:
it’s not like I’m tired of WINNING, but dude, let me catch my breath.

It's probably a blessing in disquise for KU.  Have you been in their engineering or business school buildings?  They make the Docking State office building in Topeka seem nice.

They can spend half the amount of upgrading Allen and improve all their professional school facilities.

God forbid they actually "educate" someone over there.  Good grief.

I have a friend who is in construction.  He was hiring an electrician who was supposed to do some "quick fixes" in AFH and word is that the place is a death trap.  He figured some City Code guy was getting fat to look the other way.  Him and his electrician buddies apparently have an "up in flames" pool about AFH.  None will work on it anymore as they don't want their fingerprints on that deathtrap.

If they were to (hypothetically) somehow scrape up the dough for a new venue, would they change to name of the building to honor someone people have actually heard of?  Who the eff is Phog Allen anyway?  Seems like Roy Williams Fieldhouse would do wonders for their recruiting, as people actually know that name outside of Lawrence.  Playing up their ties to UNC could be huge for them.

Roy is their winningest coach, right.  They named their money raising fund after him already, but naming their new (hypothetical, LOL like they could afford one!) "field house" after him would be better.

Every time a Dave Armstrong type would mention the location of their home games people would be like "oh yeah, I remember Roy was there before he went big time," instead of "who is Ray Allen?"

But, again, this is all crazy to even talk about, because they have some very serious financial problems.

maybe they should remove the press row next to the basket for recliners like they did with the local high school football stadium.

By the way, you have to admire the city of Lawrence using one facility for their high schools and KU football.  Shows they are willing to save money by having one facility that rivals Hummer sports park.

You are getting Haskell and KU confused.  Lawrence uses the Haskell facilities for games.  The stadiums are really similar in many ways, but KU's is way bigger than Haskell.

If they had the money to replace Phag Allen Field Hose, they wouldn't spend it.  The stands are filled with people 50+, who reminisce about the good old days when the Four Seasons cranked out hits on the jukebox, etc., the days when they watched games at Allen.   The fan demographics are getting older, too.  So, in a few years the smell of stale Old Spice and Ben Gay may offset the piss smell.

Greatest venue in college athletics, any outsider who see's the place immediately wants to sell all of their worldly belongings and move to Lawrence.
