Snyder's recruiting philosophy has been discussed plenty, I don't think its a terrible one, nor is it the only way to do it at K-State.

Plus, I think the focus of his comment was 5 stars from Texas, and unless we have an excellent connection with a prospect I agree. We must go hard after each and every 4/5 star that is local though, and I think we do (Harper/Browns). But our Texas kids are mainly going to be 3 star types and I think that I realistic.

Ah yes, the extreme of tuckville . . . "You guys put up this absurd demand that Snyder land a whole class of 4 and 5 star guys, that's NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN AT K-State."

Reality:  Smart people have said, "Get better recruiters, get with the times, and do a better job of recruiting 3 star types, good JC players as needed, while finding true DITR types.   Also that athletic administration needs to tell Snyder that he is going to get better facilities, and if it's a little loud with all the construction work or makes things inconvenient for awhile than that's just tough, Snyder will just have to deal with it.  Snyder Part II means Snyder doesn’t get absolute control of everything like in Snyder I."

That doesn't sound like Snyder at all.  Writer probably took a lot of liberties with that quote.

Why wouldn't/shouldn't five-star recruits be interested in KSU?

Next step: start recruiting the Brandon Weeden's.  Hit up the professional baseball ranks, military, and steal some Mormons from BYU.

for the kind of 5-star thugs we'd get out of urban recruiting hot beds, there is little appeal in Manhappiness.

Do you really not know the answer to this?

So if you were a 5 star recruit who wasn't from the state of Kansas you would choose k-state over Texas, USC, Florida, Alabama?

NU, OSU, OU, CU, aTm all get them regularly.  That's just the traditional B12 schools not named TX.  Vtech (who our fans like to compare us to) has SIX 4 star players in this recruiting class already.  If you don't try, you deserve the garbage recruits that you get.  My biggest pet peeve about the DOD was people saying that Snyder did it with DITR exclusively.  eff that, we recruited like monsters in the mid 90s.  All of our recruiters went to OU and we immediately fell off the recruiting map.  Snyder can work magic with decent talent but he can put together a DOD with elite talent.

Back then, they didn't know to rate JCs, most were 5 and 4 stars. Now, just a few are.

I'd tend to agree.  He'll go hard after local talent if it fits the system.

I think he did learn last time around that if you put your eggs into the four and five star basket at Kansas State, you're going to end up on the wrong end of the stick more often than not.  My personal feeling is that he's learned it's better to have a roster of three-star kids with a high retention rate (in terms of turnover) is preferable to whiffing and ending up with a bunch of "Plan D" kids that you bring in during emergency recruiting weekends in late January.  Some of those classes he had at the end of Snyder I were just horrible in terms of numbers...both number of signees and number of kids that actually played a down before either quitting or transferring.  It was either that 2003 or 2004 class where he ended up recruiting somewhere near 23 or 24 kids and only 10-12 actually ever played a down.  The others didn't qualify, quit, or transferred.

One thing that Snyder has done heavily in this go around is lean on grayshirts.  He seems to be redshirting less and grayshirting more.  I think this gives him a lot more flexibility in terms of getting more 'mature' kids into the system down the road, and if he needs to keep a redshirt in his pocket, he has that ability.

Anyway, I agree with the comment in the article that players go under intense evaluations.  I think that's one of the reasons why a lot of the kids we get fit somewhere in the system because of all of the studying we do on them prior to making the offer.  I also think that's why we end up sending a lot of kids to the NFL as well.
