TOPEKA | The capital city of Kansas will be referred to for the month of March as "Google, Kansas — the capital city of fiber optics."

Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten signed a proclamation Monday calling for the temporary name in an effort to convince Google to make Topeka a test site for an ultrafast Internet connection.

Bunten said he hoped the move would set Topeka apart from other cities vying for Google's attention, which include Grand Rapids, Mich., and Baton Rouge, La.

City attorney Jackie Williams said the city couldn't change its name to Google for a short time and then change it back. But he saw no problem with a proclamation calling for Topeka to be referred to as "Google."

Kansas is what it is, but I was trying to explain to you down in Atlanta that Topeka is not on the prairie. Our rainfall here runs about 32 inches a year. If you get out to Manhattan [Kansas], where Kansas State University is, well, it gets flatter. The wheat fields go as far as you can see. But here it's not. There's lots of trees and lots of water and we're going to develop this riverfront into something very, very nice.

Seems like they've been even more shameless in the past.

Humorously, this isn’t the first time Topeka has tried something like this. Apparently, in August 1998, the city has a proclamation to change its name to “ToPikachu” — yes, after the Pokemon character. So this move seems roughly 100 times more sane than that one.
