I know winning makes everything ok, but how does he grade out so far?

per _fan's stats

Total Defense - #17

Scoring Defense - #15

Rush Defense - #16

Pass Defense - #40

Everything is top 20 except pass defense, and we haven't even hit OU OSU or TT.  I guess ultimately the DC is responsible for the defense as a whole but Tom has been the dead weight for this staff so far.

Personel wise, the secondary is clearly our worst unit and Baylor has a top 10 passing attack.  Mizzou has been putting up great numbers too.

At this point, his coaching shouldn't be a concern.

Don't like how he expects Tysyyyn to cover dudes like Wright one-on-one, very few safeties in the nation could do that.   Still, the #40 passing D is nothing to sneeze at, especially when our rush D has been so good.  Unless you're like an Alabama or something, you don't see many teams with a great D in every facet, seems like you have to sacrifice a little in one area or the other.  Hayes does have an impressive resume though, so I'm not too worried about him.

KSU's defense is significantly better than last year, yet the lone new coach is the dead weight of the staff?  How do you know that he's not the coach who's most responsible for the turnaround?  He could be the unofficial co-defensive coordinator who is running the defense for all you know.

Phew, what a relief.
Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

Quote
K-State keeps finding new ways to win, each one more improbable than the last. Tech’s Seth Doege, who had thrown one interception in 292 attempts before Saturday, tossed three against the Wildcats, including a pick-six to Nigel Malone on K-State’s first series.

“Coach drew it up and told us they were going to run that play during the week,” Malone said, referring to secondary coach Tom Hayes. “He told me to make sure I saw that route when it came. I just read it and tried to jump on it.”

One more old coach who can't recruit.

5 stars who are told: "cover that guy" <<<<< 3 stars who are told: "when they set up like this they are going to run this and you need to jump in front of it and run it back for a pick six"

Pretty sure Malone has more picks than like 90% of the 5*s.  Not saying that recruiting 3*s is better than recruiting 5*s but Malone is pretty damn good.

5* are handed out to sure-fire NFL beasts.

Other than the elite blue chip dudes, all of the other recruits are a toss-up.  The difference is the coach evaluating the talent.  Is our team better or worse because we have a few more 4*s than 3*s?  No.  Sprinkle in some 5*s, on the other hand...

I'm on #teamhayes too but lets stop tarding up the place with praising a D-1 BCS level coach with credit for doing what even the slackest jawed 8th grade position coach does.

Yeah.  OK, sorry.

He has been the defensive coordinator at OU, Stanford, KU, and UCLA.  And he was the D-Backs coach for the Redskins and the Saints.  But 8th grade coaches probably would have noticed the same thing.  8th grade coaches would have figured out how to get their kids two more picks in the second half.  8th grade coaches would have held TT to zero touchdowns in the second half.

Add me to the tard tally.

We had a 5 star sprinkle on top of our cupcake, but it fell off and the wind blew it all the way to Tennessee.
