HAYS — A man who threw clothes and other items out of his car windows Thursday afternoon while leading troopers on a chase reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour was naked by the time he crashed into a semitrailer about 8 miles east of Hays, a Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman said. "There's never a dull moment out there on the interstate," trooper Tod Hileman said.Hileman said troopers think they have collected all of the items of clothing and cash, as well as an empty lockbox, that Jacob R. Craft, 21, of Lawrence, allegedly threw from the car window as he drove before the 1:54 p.m. crash on Interstate Highway 70. Craft was taken to Hays Medical Center for observation following the incident but has since been taken into custody, Hileman said.Speeding vehicle fledThe incident started when a trooper tried to stop Craft's speeding westbound Oldsmobile Alero west of Russell. The vehicle sped up instead of pulling over, Hileman said.Troopers pursued the car for about 10 minutes, until the car hit stop sticks placed on the highway near Victoria. The car kept going on its rims at a slower speed for a couple more miles, until it turned into the median and hit the second and third axle of a semi in the eastbound lane, Hileman said.Slowed before collisionHileman said David L. Thiggan, 49, of Salina, the semi driver, saw the car coming and had slowed to about 30 mph before the collision. Thiggan was not injured, according to the KHP report.Charges being recommended against Craft include driving under the influence, speeding, reckless driving, fleeing and eluding and aggravated battery, because it appeared he intentionally drove into the semi, Hileman said.Thiggan wore a seat belt, while Craft did not have his seat belt on, according to the KHP report.
