some of this probably applied to teaching as well as general office environment so disregard if so:

- after you've spent enough time there to figure out who the most respected and highest ceiling people are in positions at least two levels above yours pick out the best candidate and ask them to mentor you. in the opening discussion find out how much time they could invest (like 1 hour every two weeks or a month or whatever) and set a meeting for those times and come prepared for that meeting with questions and seeking advice (even if you don't have anything you need come with open ended questions and let them talk). You can also ask to be involved in projects they are working on. you'll a) learn a lot and b) attach yourself to their coat tails to get a piece of their rise through the company.

- you'll eventually have a ton of time to goof off and message board and just waste away. doing some of that is good but use a lot of that time to develop yourself. get a designation, take a class, take on additional work, volunteer for projects, whatever. again, multiple things here, you'll a) learn a lot and b) make people see you have drive.

- ask a lot of questions. don't "fake it till you make it" because you'll take some black eyes. also it shows you are really paying attention. BUT, when you are told to do something do it to the best of your knowledge and THEN ask if you did it correctly. be a self starter and all that.

- agree on dress above requirements (but don't go nuts), agree on attending all after work stuff you are able to.

- if there is a society in the space your company is in join it and be relatively active in the society.

Steve Dave’s advice on the out of work stuff is very good. I hated doing all the social crap, but it helped. The mentoring idea is fantastic too.  Just being someone who is willing to help (while not bitching) and not loaf is like over half the battle...Every younger person I have worked with at my company over the last 15+ years who really did these things has moved up rapidly.

I am now at a point where I have almost zero desire to move up, and am looking to not move down.  Ironically, avoiding social situations suits this goal quite well!

This is exactly how I assume business people talk.

“Hey Jim did you do that business today?”

“Oh sorry I got caught up on other business. I’ll try to do that business next week.”

we also celebrate who did the most/best business this month and rub it in other people's faces because they did less or not as good business. rough ridin' own them with that. this is what we call a pro-business move.

I follow lots of coworkers on instagram but not facebook or twitter. But I usually look pretty closely at who else from the company is following first. It's fine for some and not for others. Generally, it's the equivalent of going to a social event after work - you're just getting to know your coworkers better.

**This of course assumes you don't post crap on your instagram that you wouldn't want people at work to know about.

A big one is make sure your job has clear deliverables or objectives or whatever. Your manager should lay that out when you start but if they don't write your own down and discuss it with them after you get the lay of the land

Got a call from the receptionist to my office today and she said "Your 2 O'Clock is here".  It made me feel like a real business person.  Maybe someday I'll be able to tell an assistant to "clear my afternoon" or something along those lines.
