Who the eff thinks a counter offer is separate from a negotiation?

obviously the definition of a counteroffer includes that part of a negotiation, but in the context of a job offer, common parlance is that a counteroffer is something that comes from your current employer.

Quote
Yeah, I got a great job offer, but I decided to accept a counteroffer instead.

Now, based on the above, if someone said that would you believe a) that they played hardball with a potential employer and got them to up their offer or b) they decided to stay with their current employer in exchange for a raise.

That makes sense.

My manager asked me if I was searching for other jobs today. It was completely random. She said she heard a rumor and I lol'd really hard in the meeting. She said she was super relieved and that the execs told her to do whatever she had to, to make sure the rumor false. Who the eff comes up with this stuff? Anyways, can't wait for my yearly review, they just showed their hand.

LOL, I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago.   Turned it into a fat raise.

I once was asked to help grease the wheels for someone from my current company to be contracted out to another company as I had previously done work that company was involved in. I was asked early on if I wanted to be the one to be contracted out and I said "If I want to do that line of work, I'll go work for them." So we didn't get selected, but after my bosses were confused and thought that I really wanted to go work for the other company. Big bonus that year

I wish I was that smart.  I think I know who did it, and it was probably an effort to get me in trouble over a disagreement we'd had, little did he know it got me a 10+% raise  even after I told my boss it wasn't true and I had no intention of leaving.

Start a new job tomorrow. Huge raise for me but there will be a crap ton of pressure on me too. I'm looking forward to the challenge though.

First day on the new job was super great. Who knew that the further up the ladder you go the easier it is?

it makes sense, doesn't it?  i mean, i don't know what your first job was but mine was at Taco Via and it rough ridin' sucked.  you think your boss is gonna send you home early so you can hit the golf course while he knocks out the "tough stuff" ?

come on, son.  use your damn noodle.
