any old townies remember a "hillside grocery" on 17th and leavenworth (playground now)?  gma tobias grew up in mhk and i knew her dad owned a little grocery store but didn't really know anything about it and recently found out exactly where it was

grocery store on 17th and leavenworth? if there was one, it hasn't been there for at least forty years or more.

1701 leavenworth was the address - know my dad would hang out there as a kid but have no idea of when it was knocked down other than "some point after the early 60's"

man. without physically driving by i really doubt that 1701 leavenworth is the site. i think that's just an old house on the corner across the street from eugene field.

well this is the point that i tell you that i knew super old old guy that compiled the list and is no longer alive tobey toburen very well, but still have never heard of that grocery store. sorry. my hunch just by looking at that list is that 75% of them were gone before 1970.

jesus christ. it wasn't in the basement of a house, it was on poyntz where the mall is now. i think the 200 block, but could've been 100. south side and you entered from the alley.

I thought they said houston and like 5th, but I wasn't paying much attention. Maybe that was a basement bar. I know the word basement was used

there was a swanson donuts that was close to bassets bike shop where a young rick daris got his first diamond back bicycle. the donut place was in the basement. then the mall came and they actually did move over to houston and 5th but it wasn't in a basement and they only stayed for a few years. hot damn my dtmhk knowledge. :Carl:

he sounds like a stud

he was. tall, skinny and a bachelor during his later years. also, a very nice yard and his front porch was light green astroturf type stuff. a true gentleman.

Recently found out I am pretty closely related to the people that started Bocker's or whatever it used to be called way back in the day. And that the family also built and sold most of the houses on either Humbolt or Leavenworth street east of the park.

My Grandma (deceased) grew up in one of the houses. Apparently when she was attending K-State her fiance at the time got ran over at a grocery store on the corner of 16th and Fairchild. There is an old store building there now, but I don't know if the spot where he was actually run over was there or somewhere else.

I've often wondered about the little store-front looking buildings on the east side of town. When and how long they were in business, etc.

I like old timey stuff.

Modified  :surprised: meant 1601 Laramie, and that is on the list.

Hey lib^7 what if we played jazz in a house my relatives built and sold a long time ago, but I didn't know it? Ha! Your house!
