Senior Jerry Rose joined the cheerleading squad when he was a freshman at Bigfork High School just for something to do, but over the past four years it has grown to be something he is passionate about and now will also help him get through college.
Rose recently made the Kansas Sate University cheerleading squad. “I’m really happy. That’s what I was aiming for this entire time, so I’m really excited,” Rose said.
Rose, who has also been a football standout while at Bigfork, visited KSU last month for his audition. He learned three stunts from existing squad members and then performed them at the tryout. Before returning to Bigfork, Rose received the good news.
“She (head KSU cheerleading coach Dani Ruoff) pulled me aside and said, ‘If you’re thinking about going to Kansas State, I have a spot open for you on the team,’” Rose said.Tryouts for the squad were actually held the day after Rose tried out, but his schedule required him to return a day earlier.Ruoff was already somewhat aware of Rose’s skill level prior to his visit. Each summer the KSU cheerleaders host a camp in Bigfork to teach stunts, cheers and dance routines.“Having Kansas State come up and hold a clinic for us every year has really helped us.,” Rose said. “Learning to do stunts from college athletes has made a big difference.”
Rose was a part of the Bigfork cheer squad every year since his freshman year with the exception of last yea
r when he was dealing with a shoulder injury.

“Cheerleading at Bigfork has been a lot of fun and it’s something that I don’t regret doing,” Rose said. “I think it has helped me out in football as much as football has helped me out with cheerleading with all the lifting."Although Rose will miss being a part of the Bigfork squad, which he said is like a big extended family, he is looking forward to his new opportuity.“I never thought I’d be cheerleading at a Division I school like Kansas State,” said Rose, who plans to major in criminology.

Rose was a member of the squad for three years; he was sidelined by a shoulder injury his junior year. McCoard tried cheerleading for a few days as a sophomore but decided it wasn’t for him. He changed his mind his senior year.“I did it because all my friends were doing it,” he said.
