by looking at it.is it asphalt shingle, wood shake, ceramic tile, etc?
in the end, EMAW will always win.
Clearly there is a family of 6'5, 170lb people living in your attic with no fear of being found out. One spilled a glass of water. Call 'clams and have him get in there and chase them out.
get up there and check to see if you have any hail damage.
just make sure you have hail damage and make someone else fix it/pay for it.

He'll still end up having to pay some out of pocket with his deductible and whatever the insurance company doesn't cover. Everyone I know that suffered damage last fall ended up paying something, regardless of which insurance they had or roofing company they used. Guess insurance companies are being much more saulish about roofs than they used to be. (Though USAA did give my little bro like $600 for a swing thing he had in his backyard. It literally had one dent and was only like $300 when he bought it 3 yrs ago, so that helped with his deductible.)

The roofing companies even took like $500 off if you put one of their signs in your yard... My little bro ended up not having to pay too much but my folks got stuck paying like $1500 (big roof), even after shopping roofers pretty well. Jacked up thing is that many houses didn't even get new roofs until recently (due to the crews being so backed up) and that same area took pretty solid hail damage last week and may need new roofs again. When I had my hail damage 5 or 6 yrs ago, the contractor took care of it all. They also priced things in such that everything worked out if you know what I mean.
roof whisperer.

he might be able to fix it really easily. a small hole can be plugged for nothing. the flipside is we're heading out of hail season and it could be a year or two until his next damaging hail storm. by then his house could be mumped in the anal passage.
