FORT WORTH -- Flower Mound Marcus doesn’t score many points but doesn’t have to because of its stingy defense. Marcus advanced to its second-consecutive Class 5A state tournament with a 46-38 victory over Cedar Hill on Saturday in the Region I final at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.Marcus (37-1) only scored more than a dozen points in one quarter but never allowed Cedar Hill (33-4) to score more than 12. Ranked No. 2 in the TABC statewide poll, Marcus returns to Austin for the state tournament having beaten No. 5-ranked Cedar Hill and third-ranked North Crowley in the regional semifinals.“Holding North Crowley and Cedar Hill to 43 and 38 points, what else can you say?” Marcus coach Danny Henderson said. “Those are two teams which could win state but our players have a tremendous amount of heart and believe it will pay off in the fourth quarter. ”Tied at 26-26 in the final minute of the third quarter, Marcus pulled away as its 3-point shooting again provided just enough of an offensive spark to go along with some heady plays by standout junior guard Marcus Smart. Junior Phil Forte hit one of his five 3-pointers to give Marcus a 29-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.Marcus senior Connor Taggart added a 3-pointer for a six-point lead. Smart fought for an offensive rebound and drove the lane to pass for an easy assist to 6-7 junior Nick Banyard to put Marcus up 34-26. Smart stole a pass on Cedar Hill’s ensuing possession to break-away for a two-handed dunk which made it 36-28 with 5:20 left. Forte and Taggart added two more of their combined eight 3-pointers to seal a second-consecutive regional championship. Forte ended with 19 points, Taggart 11 and Smart 10."There's a lot of stress late in the game and pressure and some players might want to jump out and try to steal a pass," Henderson said. "But they all stick with our defensive discipline. Everyone except Marcus and he's so smart we let him do what he wants. He's not only the smartest player I've ever coached, he's the smartest I've ever seen."Cedar Hill senior Thomas Gipson ended with 14 points but was mostly stymied with Marcus’ sagging, man-to-man defense which allowed Banyard and 6-8 junior John Malone to rotate covering Cedar Hill’s 6-7 Kansas State signee with Smart dropping back to double-team when Gipson got possession.Cedar Hill went scoreless for 5:50 of the first quarter as Marcus jumped out to an 11-0 lead with Forte leading the way with a pair of 3-pointers.

Cedar Hill spent much of the first quarter firing the ball around the perimeter, unable to find Kansas State commit Gipson in the post. The Longhorns didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 2:12 mark of the first quarter. Gipson attempted just two field goals in the first quarter.“You can’t let Gipson beat you,” Henderson said. “He’s too good. Not only can beat you in points, he can beat you by fouling your guys out. We were going to double him, no question about it.”
FM Marcus will advance with a 53-41 victory.

Willie Cauley, C, MoKan Elite- Each time the 6-foot-10 Cauley takes the floor you can see his game developing. Cut out of the mold of a Tyson Chandler type big man, he's a lengthy center who runs the floor, blocks shots and causes troubles with his length. While his offense isn't quite as developed as his defense and rebounding, he's coming around on that end of the floor and is an outstanding passer for a kid his size. He was good for 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to go along with three blocks and many more altered shots.
Semi Ojeleye is a well built wing from the class of 2013 who had a nice opening night for MoKan Elite. The well built 6-foot-5 wing was aggressive to the rim, knocked down some open looks and appears to be tracking as a high major prospect. ? A teammate of Ojeleye and Willie Cauley on MoKan Elite, 2013 shooting guard Austin Ruder is a dangerous catch and shoot guy. At one point during MoKan's win over King James, the 6-foot-2 Ruder knocked down four straight threes during a four minute span while racking up 18 points. ?
