drove fresno-manhattan-fresno scenic routes recently.  pretty enjoyable - saw tons of ungulates:  pronghorn, deer, elk, moose, cows.  averaged about 48 mpg.  colorado and kansas are so ridiculously wet and green.  everything west of colorado (except a tiny corner of wyoming) is already dry as eff and everyone living there will probably die or burn away this summer.

hotel and restaurant prices are up.  got a little sticker shocky, even though i expected it.

a couple of semi-unrelated observations:

1)  saw a lot of older housing stock and historical buildings and it just struck me how much richer we are now and how much our expectations have increased.  like 120 years ago middle-class families lived in houses the size of my kitchen and presumably were happy to do so.  even just 40-50 years ago most houses were so small and shitty.

2)  drove a lot of smaller highways and as someone who is very bullish on rapid ev adoption it was noticeable to me how once you're off the interstate, you can buy gas in the most ridiculously tiny corner of anywhere but how there are basically no charging options east of california.  not an insurmountable problem at all (one ev advantage is that power infrastructure basically goes everywhere and you don't need to continuously send tankers full of gas out to the middle of nowhere to keep the fleet moving), but just struck me how expansive our current gasoline infrastructure is and that replicating that for other fuel sources will be a massive undertaking.

I was in SW KS over Memorial day weekend and told my dad I'd never seen it so green and he said he has only seen it a handful of times like this.

I agree wholeheartedly with the second part, but that infrastructure is 100 years in the making. I think we will be pretty efficient and in 10 years from now it will be incredible how much has been adopted. And guess what, gas stations will add EV chargers so it isn’t like we will start from scratch.

I read like a 50 slide PowerPoint uploaded by the LA county sheriff dept or something that had several hilarious typos/misspelled words and also recounted the Laughlin shootout. It was great.

Guys, Tahoe is amazing. Check into your hotel, a quick $90 win at the black jack table then take a 5 min scooter ride to the lake for some beers

Currently 83 degrees with no humidity at X thousand feet up.

Please tell me exactly where that is, I am going to Tahoe with fam in July.
Called "Beach House" in South Lake Tahoe. Only open noon to 6pm.

Just a fyi apparently you have to pay $25 per person to access the beach at this location so if you plan on bringing your gaggle of kids there are better/cheaper places. Not many better places to crush some light domestic lagers tho.
ok then tell me the Tahoe dos and donts for the whole brood.

Not sure where you are staying but here are some pro tips for South Lake Tahoe area

Went to 3 Breweries (Ranked in order)

1. North of South - Almost all outdoor seating in a shaded area with picnic tables/live band/corn hole etc. Beer was very good.
2. The Brewery at Lake Tahoe - Mainly indoor seating with a small patio. Only had 1 beer here but it was good and the bar keep was fun to talk to.
3. Stateline Brewery - Located on the main tourist drag it has a great patio but the beer was crap and the food was shittier.

Non Brewery/Gambling stuff

There are lime scooters everywhere, not sure how old your gaggle of kids are but it was super fun/cheap to jump on a lime scooter and explore the town or take them somewhere to eat instead of driving or walking. Just download the app and it will show you were the closest scooters are.

We looked into renting a boat but it was around $600 for 4 hours...not worth it for 2 people but would be fun for the family. Water will still probably be cold in July but it would be a good time, Emerald bay is pretty and where most people "cove out" (but not like ozarks cove out where everyone ties their boats together).

I believe this is a free beach where you can take the kids and also have a beer at the tiki bar...https://goo.gl/maps/Dp4cnLm8qv7MhWPA6

The casino's have a very "90's" feel and are no where as nice as Vegas but are still a good time if you want to give your kids $20 to hit the arcade while you go slam some drinks upstairs.

My buddy had some free comps so we went up to the fancy restaurant at the top floor of Harrahs for dinner one night, excellent food and excellent view.

You take Mrs KK here and you might be adding another to your brood of kids

Kauai Help!!!!! My wife just called and yelled at me saying there are no reservations for anything when we are there in 3 weeks!!! Like, how much of a problem is this? Do we have to eat gas station food all week? Are there decent places that we can pop in near the area that don't require reservations? Not looking for anything fancy especially with the kids, but I was hoping to try some different places throughout the week.

Please advise!!!

Thanks, Mrs SF is pretty worried we aren't going to get any tacos. I'm probably going to try and make a bunch of random 3pm dinner reservations just in case.  :ohno:

I've never been to Hawaii, but I can't imagine that the food trucks and seafood shacks I've seen Guy Fieri eat at require any reservations.

Jack in the Box has amazing tacos and there's one in Lihue. Fun times for everyone in the family. The wife can have a frozen eli's cheesecake slice and you can get the kids that jack in the box antenna ball head thingy to play with.

Mountains are the best summer vacation spot in my opinion. Love the beach in late fall when my face doesn't melt.
