my parents are only vaguely into those things you mentioned and they went a couple months ago and liked it a lot for the things spracne mentioned. they also went to a saints game because someone just handed them tickets which is weird. they do tours which I think helps the experience. In my old age I've become a big fan of tours on my first day in a new place.

I was going to go this winter/spring but couldn't make it work before it gets oppressively hot and humid. Maybe next year.

Are there good beaches in Portugal?

obviously.

it's not obvious. seems like it might be rocky and cold and people there seem to love the crap out of the Mediterranean beaches and I've never heard anything about Portugal ones

but thanks

I'm so glad you asked! Willie Mae's Scotch House, in Treme. I'm not sure what Scotch means in this context, because they don't serve any booze. Go hungry and get the fried chicken. Get you a fresh-squeezed lemonade, too.

West of Lisbon had some I saw but nothing amazing. I think southern of Lisbon had a lot of good beaches but didn't go that way.

Porto, no.

I'm thinking Puerto Escondido

Croatia AirBNB's look gross in comparison

Thanks, sd!  I was just wondering if they had connecting rooms there.  Time to start saving up the Hyatt points for a future trip.

I grabbed an Airbnb around rua San Jose and rua das pretas. It was a little cheaper but super easy and flat (which is a huge bonus in Lisbon) walk to city center. There is also an awesome boulevard just to the west that is tree lined and full of these small outdoor bars we would hang out at all night. Everybody did.  Definitely liked being close to those.

can you still do the two free Hyatt credit card nights thing for the Grand hyatt?

I think they just give you points now instead of free nights. could be wrong though.
