Wife along with bro sis in law not as curious as me so limited chance to explore.  We headed to the mark twain caves to beat the heat.

pick up tix to taylor swift and party your nuts off.  then swing by the horseshoe and see how a real school builds a football stadium.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

I just stayed at the Element Omaha Midtown Crossing (an SPG property). It was really nice.

There seemed to be a lot of recycling bins in Omaha, so good job on that Omaha.

Have stayed there. Good hotel. I like the Element brand a lot. Great breakfast sandwiches!

esteemed gE travelers, I am taking my wife who is way out of my league to Rome and Lucerne in mid January and am looking for pro tips on both cities

Flying AA 777s via Heathrow and BA Airbuses to Rome and from Zurich

Rome - Boscolo Exedra Roma, 5 nights
- colosseum
- Vatican
- pantheon
- a bunch of cool old crap?
- other things please?

Travel between?
- 10 hr train ride or fly into Zurich and 1 hr train ride (I'm guessing flight is our best option)
- I assume the best bet is to just take public trains everywhere or whatever?

Lucerne - Renaissance Lucerne, 3 nights
- ski the alps one day
- adorable Swiss town?
- sing sound of music songs?

I know this sounds stupid, but one of the most fun things to do in rome is to go look through a pretty decent amount of travel stuff you like and generally respect: nytimes 36 hours, travel section, anthony bourdain, look at some other travel guides.  And find good trattorias, cafes and bars.  Then plan some walks and stop in at 3 places for coffee or drinks and do some shopping in between.  There is always a little shop, bar, cafe that you can stop off for a glass of wine at or a cup of espresso.  Spending time in a semi-structured environment where you don't have anything to do really, but you have an idea of where you are going generally and where things are relatively is the most enjoyable way to experience a place in my opinion, particularly with your lover.
