False alarm everyone. For the first time in forever we didn’t impulsively book a trip. Had it ready but backed off. Lots of smaller trips already planned so we will revisit a European location next year. I didn’t like the point situation and would rather wait.

In case you were wondering, I didn’t grow up or get smarter or anything, we are doing dry January so if we had this idea 2 weeks from now I’d be scrambling to figure out everything I booked last night right now.

Just go to Ireland to watch the cats in August and book an extra week around it.

I'm doing this. Trying to figure out the other stop, thinking Amsterdam.

anyone been to the gulf shores and have any pro tips? Is march a terrible time go there? I saw the temps are in the 60's and the water is about the same. Seems chilly.

March might be a bit early for the beach in Gulf Shores.  We've always stayed in Fort Walton.  Much less crowded than Gulf Shores beaches.  We would rent beach houses here... https://www.kivadunes.com/

thanks. still considering. pretty cheap condos and decent houses right on the beach, but I guess that's fairly pointless if its too cold to go in.

My college aged daughter and several of her sorority sisters are going to Gulf Shores for spring break.  So, maybe it's warmest enough.
We were down there a couple years ago in March. It was definitely too cool for any water activities. We didn't even ride bikes as it rained almost every day.

Just enjoyed the food and not working. We did make the short drive to Fort Morgan. From there you can ride the ferry to Dauphin Island and circle around Mobile Bay. Visit the Navy stuff in Mobile.

It's definitely better to go in May.

I want to but my family has other crap they think is more important than doing this. I disagree, but I’m outnumbered.

My kids will get a say in vacation when they pay their way.  That said, wife is more swayed by the kids.  She spent a month planning a European vacation that included Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. I simply suggested in front of the kids a cruise to Ibiza.

Ibiza it is.

somehow I will have been married for 20 years in November. Going to the Andaz Maui for a week for it. I'm a globalist so hopefully they upgrade me but I've read that it's basically full of globalists so upgrades are usually not like to a private pool suite. We'll see. Flying AA first class. Doing the whole deal. Gonna whip ass.

Rusty, as noted awhile back we kicked trim to the curb and are now going to Mets on April 9th and Yankees on the 12th. Have an 8 year old to appease for the two days in between for being at baseball for those days. broadway musical is probably on the agenda with museums or whatever. Staying in connecting rooms at the Thompson Central Park.

I’ll be married 20 years in December, but I don’t think we’re doing anything. We don’t exactly have “leave the kids for a week” parents.

I let the kids help plan vacations. It makes them more excited, so it makes the vacations go better. We’ve done 3 fall break vacations the last 3 years and they’ve all been great. We’re going to Europe for 2 weeks this summer and I’ve started letting them help plan what we’re going to do.

Honestly a big bus+empire State building+something like the natural History museum would be a great time and fill two days pretty easily especially if you spend time wandering central park (which you should also do). And yeah Broadway would be great but I don't keep up on what's good, especially for kids . Maybe the Lion King?

this could be a fun lunch close to your hotel. Random food court basically in the Columbus circle subway station: https://g.co/kgs/tmCjBnK

Don't know if there's any Harry Potter fans but there's a pretty good store near Madison Square Park. K-town can be fun if she's into K-pop. In general if someone is really into something there's probably a specialty store or experience they will really enjoy.

I finally did one of the circle boat tours around Manhattan, I found it more enjoyable than I usually find boat tours. We did the full circle one the day after we walked tip to tip the day before (saw one going underneath the bridge when we started at 225th st) so kinda cool way to see the same things we saw in a different way and I'm a big skyline architecture dork.

That sounds like this one: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/sail-nyc/items/25950/calendar/2025/01/?asn=aia&full-items=yes

which I have also done and loved it. Might be a bit long and boring for kids though.

A good way to get kids on the water is obviously the staten island ferry but the regular NYC ferry from like Wall Street to Dumbo is a quicker fun boat ride.

best way to get kids on the water is to rent some jet skis and get wild.  will smith did it in the movie hitch.

Agreed. my typical "let me see the statue" for a new tourist with me is to take the ferry.

Go to the slime museum. It's really stupid and expensive, but my kids loved it. It was a nice kid break for them to have something to do in between me stopping at all of the bars I like. I think it's called Sloomoo. You have to get reservations, but your 8 year old and probably older one will enjoy.

Also if you are flying out of JFK, try to carve out some time to see the TWA Hotel/Terminal. Some signs say you need to be a guest but you don't - you can walk around and go to the Connie cocktail lounge and restaurant and see the mini-museum exhibits. In the winter you can also go to the rooftop pool bar for free and have a drink and watch planes take off. (Costs $25/person for roof access when it's warm). We stayed for a night as a mini staycation and it was fun.

I'm having a bad day at BBS'ing.  I might need to retire.

i booked an overnight here last year knowing essentially zero about it and just picked it because it was the most convenient option.  ms tobias was all "omg amazing choice i've always wanted to see this place, great job!" and i found myself unable to fake that i had the slightest clue what i was doing when i booked it.

was a pretty cool place!
