I (a white midwesterner) always say "G'day mate" to the british guy at my office. lady at work tried to explain to me once that it was people from australia that say that and I told her to throw another shrimp on the barb'y.

My whiter than white parents:

1. Living next door to 2 gay men for 15 years.

2. Having an Indian Family (as in India) rent the house on the other side for 4 straight summers . . . falls completely in line with the "meeting and then being okay with" scenario, actually more than okay. In fact now I get lambasted with, "the kids are all doctors and engineers now you know" every time the subject comes up.
