realized i didn't address the 2nd part of chingon's query.

good - easy, lots of mutant colors and patterns to choose from, convenient size, legal in most areas.
bad - starter snake, won't impress snake elites.

lampropeltis and pituophis are just about as easy, eurasian rat snakes too, but imo, they're usually assholes.  most snakes of tropical origin are a little more fussy about enviro conditions, some of the australians not quite as much.  some of the less commons, like lichanura/charina, sand boas & heterodon can also be easy, but most less-popular snakes are a little harder or require more specialized care at some life stage.

OT: why do snakes freak me out? I mean, the ones that I see in my yard (five times a year or so) aren't going to and can't hurt me, but still...

How do I prepare myself for a snake encounter in the wild?

There's nothing that rough ridin' presses my buttons like a goddamn fussy snake.

It's actually been found that humans are programmed to hate snakes. When the human race was starting to form, snakes were deadly, so it just got into the early human's brains to hate snakes. It's just like how some animals have instincts that tell them to not eat certain foods, stay away from some kinds of animals, etc. Some people these days either are not born with it or get over it, so that's why some people love snakes.

I don't know the reason for this. A lot of people think snakes are slimy to touch, but in fact they're very soft. I read somewhere that the general population has some sort of dislike/fear/repulsion towards any living creature that has more than 6 legs or no legs at all. I don't mind so much snakes but don't approach me with a centipede, please.

I hope this helps!

There was a snake in my yard yesterday afternoon. I did NOT kill it, as I am now aware that I don't have to. It did act a little fussy, though.

I can't even fathom the internal BBS conflict that would occur if a snake ate OK_Cat's small child.

My wife demands I kill every spider she sees(usually in a very high pitched panic-filled voice while scratching and clawing to get on top of something), even after she sees all the bugs that may be in it's web.

How do you think she reacts to snakes?

It's nothing personal...

why would i have mongooses? (mongeese?)???  do they kill gophers?  because, man, this gopher pisses me off.  Just like KSU Celeb Bill Murray when he tried to kill the gopher in Caddyshack.

i prefer a snake that will kill the gopher, and then gtfo of my property.

if you utilize the anaconda you will need to flood your back yard so this is also something to consider
