I thought that they counted the votes because only old people vote, and the places that win are what old people enjoy. Golden Corral won Best restaurant of Topeka several times.
No, the Topeka C-J hand counts all the votes. Then they double check them for accuracy. Then, because they are so concerned with being transparent and not letting their biases get in the way, they send the votes off to an independent tabulator company in town to be counted for a third time.
The problem, of course, is that the tabulator company also received a reader's choice award, and this represents a conflict of interest.
So the votes are then shipped out of state.
It's really quite a process.
