It's not just a KC thing.  Then entire SE part of this country listens to Finebaum religiously.  Jim Rome is huge in CA, and many other parts of the country.  WFAN is very big in NYC area.

The only thing that MIGHT be unusual about KC, is that while they too love sports talk radio, the sports talk radio in this town has very little interest in doing national topics and focus almost entirely on very local schools and teams.  KC gets a higher proportion of listeners to sports talk radio than many other cities, but I don't think it's too much higher than Finebaum in the SE....that's an entire region of States all listening to one show.

I mean, I listen to NPR too, when sports talk in on a commercial break or talking about stupid baseball stats.   But, to I donate to NPR and secretly want to have phone sex with Terry Gross? Sure, who doesn't.

the difference between those other cities you mentioned and KC sports radio is that we really don't have sports radio in kc.  the kc guys know very little about the sports they cover and only cover very few sports.  it's kind of a hybrid model of sports radio/infomercial/oprah/blog/diary.  all in all, a very lazy production from both channels in town.  certainly not anything i would describe as sports radio.

You forgot Jay Mohr, he's great for a nationally syndicated guy.

admittedly, I don't listen to sports talk in other cities, so I have no perspective.  But, I don't consider 810 to be lazy production.  I dunno.  I think they've identified a popular product and maximized production of it.  IMO.  Their audience wants coverage of local sports and they produce the crap out of local sports coverage.

I'm 100% fine with 810. They talk about local sports teams and college athletics. Tbh IDGAF about national stuff. I can get my fix of national stuff watching ESPN in the afternoon.

I'm too lazy to look this up, but I would venture to guess that there are very few cities in the US that have the ability to talk about 3 major BCS schools as a local product, as well as two professional teams.

I'm sure Dallas can talk about all the the Texas BCS level schools and all their pro teams.

I love sports radio.  I can't stand the shock jocks for sports radio tho. Like jersey guys with a grizzly voice, that sound like they smoke 5 packs a day, and they just got back from a 4 day binder. Also, they add noise effects after a joke. Woof! You'll find them a lot on fox sports radio stations.

WEEI in Boston talks only about the 4 pro teams in Boston...and the Yankees.

Everyone there listens to EEI though it has some competitors now.

They know nothing about college sports except BC football once every month for maybe 15 minutes and will also discuss the Beanpot but just to point out that BU always wins it

once you realize that the radio person's sole mission is to troll people (if he wants to be entertaining), it becomes a joy to  listen to because you can just sit there and imagine all the stupid people listening who are getting mad about it.

They're entercom. Sister station of 610. This doesn't surprise me.

The Sports Hub is now #1 in sports talk ratings but I still listen to EEI every day and lol

I dislike the BITB half the time because I could give a eff about what Jack is doing this weekend or about how some announcer is better than another announcer.  I also dislike the BBQ infomercial segments and all racing discussion.

My biggest problem is a much bigger problem though and that is the popularity of Baseball.  Nothing makes me instantly annoyed as Soren arguing some anagram named statistic with some other dumbass, then they both pause while one can look it up online while on air.  The worst.  The complete over stat porn nerd out of baseball is insane to me.

i mean, here's the thing, Soren has the time slot from 10-2pm.  There's gonna be some down time in there.  I imagine it's the same with most afternoon talk shows.  I will give it to Soren though, he's got some pretty good guests.  Yes, his stat orgies are over the top.  But, when he's bantering stats with Buster Olney, I'll give him a pass.
