Dress Socks
« on: March 21, 2011, 09:04:16 PM »
How do you choose what color of dress socks to wear in the morning?  Have heard of several theories, and have yet to fully commit to one.

(As best as possible in all situtations)... Match the shoe color? Match the pants? Something incredibly obscure? Other?

Thanks, guys.  Welcome to the offseason.

almost never go lighter than the pant.
if contrasting the pant, match the shirt or compliment the shirt.
patterned socks should not take attention away from the shirt or pant.
solids are easy, but also boring.
shoe color shouldn't affect sock color unless you're wearing a crazy-colored leather pair of shoes. However, if shoes are black, I usually stick with black socks or dark colors.
best of luck, go beards and handsome emaws.

Match the pants.

Seems to be the majority. Any EMAW'ers fall into the other camps?

always, always match the sock to the shirt. If your shirt looks good with the pants, the socks will flow with the pants. Sidenote, always match belt with shoes.

I guess matching the shirt comes into play if you wear a polo.  Don't wear white socks when you're wearing a white button-down shirt.  HTH.

EDIT: And you shouldn't ever be wearing any other color button-down than white or blue or pink.  And don't wear blue socks with a blue button-down either.  Fear the Beard.

Black/Grey pants = black/grey sock.
khaki pants/brown shoes = medium to dark brown (never do khaki on khaki).
Brown pants/light shirt = medium to light brown socks.

Do not ever match the pants, unless it's black. Match the shirt, or do a different shade of the pants.

Not that hard, people.

Yes, mostly match to your pants.  But if you're wearing a dark sock, it's also OK to have an accent pattern (e.g., argyle) in the sock the same color as your tie.  (Not sure this is a tie conversation though.)

Or, you could just wear bright red socks with everything and be known as "Red Socks Guy."   :dunno:

You looking to stand out?

Yeah, I'm going to listen to people who have payless shoe source loafers and $18 Kohls dress pants. This isn't 1939. You don't have to match pants.
