Kansas about to get hit upside the head with the dumb stick.

http://www.mcphersonsentinel.com/newsnow/x713421965/Bill-would-eliminate-Kan-Ed-program

It's a long read, but I'll try to sum it up:

  • House Bill 2390 would eliminate funding for the Kan-Ed program.
  • Kan-Ed "provides databases for libraries, schools and hospitals and grant money to assist libraries in paying for Internet and technology capabilities."
  • Kan-Ed does not receive public tax dollars; instead it is funded by fees assessed on phone lines administered by the Kansas Universal Service Fund.
  • Joe McLeland has long been an advocate of eliminating Kan-Ed; ironically, he used to be a computer network analyst at Wichita State University

For any of you database folks out there, this is a $ opportunity.  Sounds like local institutions will be needing inexpensive DB programs and work.

If they handle this right, it will be a good thing, you don't want to get me started on entities like Kan-Ed.

Many states have networks like Kan-Ed and they try and control things and skim lots of Federal government funding off the top for themselves.

I'm sure the universities can fend for themselves; it would be interesting to see what the smaller institutions do.
