They suck. They are lazy, rude and they suck. Or maybe they are extremely busy. But still. If you get an e-mail, respond, and at least let the person who sent it know that it arrived in your inbox and not some spam folder. Provide some indication that you've received the e-mail.

A simple, "Can't reply now, but will get back to you tomorrow" will suffice.

But jesus, at least respond.

What if the email that you haven't responded to has a lot of questions that you aren't prepared to answer in it and you don't want to take the time to find the answers and it would be easier to act like you never got it? What then?

Lots of people I know prefer e-mail. They tell you, "just e-mail me."

Then you e-mail them, and no reply. It's annoying.

My adviser is famous for not answering emails. It usually takes 2 or 3 of them to get the lazy POS to raise my flag

"High Importance" usually works at my place of work.

I usually hate when you ask a person for like 4 different things. and they reply back only answering 1 of them. And then put a smiley face at the end. Which is pushed to the side because of their stupid baby pictures in the signature. goddamnit, getting fired up here.

I am probably the least important person on earth, so I respond to all e-mails quickly, usually within an hour of receiving them. For regular or important people, I expect a reply within 24 hours. I don't think that is an unreasonable request, particularly when they tell you that it's their preferred method of communication.

I have 2 email addresses. I give one of them to unimportant people who are likely to send me a bunch of forwards and other crap that I don't care about. I give my other email address to important people. I check the email for important people hourly, and I check the email for unimportant people like once a week, and I just skim through it then.

Maybe somebody gave you their email address for unimportant people.

sometimes I don't check my email for long stretches during the day. Then somebody who works like all the way across the building will come over to my office and tell me something and I'll wonder in my head "why didn't they just email me" and then I'll look at my email later and see that they did email me way earlier and I didn't respond.
