In a comedic context, slapping is absolutely hilarious.

Many non-comediac contexts as well.

I think the lesson here is that open relationships usually end up in a crap show.

i am not 100% up to speed on the ins and outs of will & jada's marriage, but it was my understanding this was infidelity that turned into an open relationship as a way to salvage the marriage

Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock while an attempt at enforcing a shift toward an important community norm of able-bodied folks standing up and speaking out in support of those with disabilities, unfortunately entrenched patriarchal patterns of violence and ownership ("keep MY wife's name out your mouth") and silenced Jada Pinkett Smith--a vocal advocate and disabled BIPOC woman who could have responded to the violence of Chris Rock's ableist words with a call out of Chris' unacceptable words or she could have made a choice to respond with violence if she wanted to. Instead, she was robbed of agency by Will Smith who acted on her behalf without her consent.

What is her disability?

if this happened at someone's house nobody would be kicked out. there is a line between open hand / closed fist. i mean the audience laughed when it happened.
not sure what kind of parties that you’re hosting, but if someone lays a hand on one of my guests, they’re getting kicked out

I'm not justifying Will Smith being violent, but I could certainly imagine Jada feeling like she missed out on roles or being self-conscious.  Her making jokes about it publicly is far different from someone on national TV doing it.

Alopecia isn't cancer but at that point we're just arguing degrees and accepting that it's in bad taste.  Will Smith giving an acceptance speech centered around justifying it afterward was also in pretty bad taste.

It's part of the show.  It would be like if you were on the boardwalk and you slapped the caricature artist because he accentuated your wife's buck teeth.  It's his job!

chris rock’s joke wasn’t in bad taste, it was a bad joke.  we’re talking about the same guy who said he understood why oj basically decapitated nicole and ron goldman, that was a funny joke.

everything that will smith did was wrong, chris rock did nothing wrong.

Lmao, what a champ Rock is, and what a bitch Will Smith is. That’s a cowardly rough ridin' move to do that.

You're going to have to explain how walking up to someone face to face and slapping that person, is cowardly. I mean it can be a lot of things to a lot of people but I'm not seeing cowardly.
It seems a little attention whore-y to me, but hey maybe that was the point. People will probably eventually forget why Will even did it in the first place. Less attention on his wife than if he just publicly criticized Rock.

Uh, I don't think that was calculated.

At its core, the joke is mocking Jada's appearance which is a result of a medical condition. I'm not going to pretend that I run around fighting people, but I would certainly be pissed if someone was mocking my wife over a medical condition she's sensitive about.

Regardless of Will's reaction, if this isn't a significant take away from that incident your decency as a person should 100% be called into question. The joke was out of pocket as was Will Smith's reaction, I'm legitimately confused as to how there could be any other take.

Chris Rock has two of the most famous stand up routines of all time, nether of them had a single joke making fun of someone's appearance. I can't remember any good comedian telling a joke about someone's appearance altered by disease or accident. Holding a microphone or having an audience whether it's in a theatre, arena, or the internet doesn't give you license to say whatever you want without repercussion.

I will bet anyone every single dollar I have that Chris Rock will apologize to Jada Pinkett Smith and if nothing else, he regrets telling that joke.

Yeah, it was an awful joke. I heard it and didn't get it until the camera showed Jada looking pissed off, and my comment at the time was that if she shaved her head for a role, that was a pretty funny joke, but if she has cancer or something, it sucks. But then Will Smith got up and made the quality of the joke completely irrelevant.

I'd pay $100 to watch Rock and Adam Sandler talk about this for an hour.

lots of great tweets out there but my favorite was something like chris is lucky all the dudes banging jada didn't also rush the stage

These "jokes" are also problematic. I don't know what them, at one time, having an opening relationship has anything to do her now having alopecia and the appropriateness of joking about it. She's mocked for getting it in, I haven't seen a single joke or mockery about Will doing the same with Margot Robbie and others. This whole thing is toxic masculinity run wild, just leave the woman alone, why is this so hard to do?

If it is something to be pissed about, be pissed about it.

I can't imagine someone saying something to my wife that would result in me hitting them, short of a threat of violence or something along those lines.  You know why?  Because I am an adult.  This is some childish insecure little man bullshit.

Chris Rock should have pressed charges.

lol. This is without a doubt the second worse take I've seen in this from many people.  This, for the record, is the worst
https://twitter.com/Kbrino222/status/1508436296573722626

Anyway I need to know how in the eff can you say, "Will should be able to take the joke," and say "it's just alopecia" then say Rock should press charges. He wasn't hurt, maybe embarrassed on TV, but to think he should be able to say whatever he wants but then should run to the cops, for that? That's some impressive cognitive dissonance, well done to all.
