Also, props to Chris rock for keeping it professional and for keeping the show moving when he could’ve made fun of will and his wife for a million different things that I’m sure immediately came to his mind after will yelled two separate times. You can see him think about it for a half second, bite his tongue and then keep going.

At its core, the joke is mocking Jada's appearance which is a result of a medical condition. I'm not going to pretend that I run around fighting people, but I would certainly be pissed if someone was mocking my wife over a medical condition she's sensitive about.

do we know Chris (or his writers) was aware of her condition?

I doubt the writers were involved as I took it as an ad-libbed joke.  I don't know if he was but I don't think it takes a lot of sense to keep your mouth shut about a woman's bald head if you aren't sure.  If I'm Will and I know the joke hurt my wife, I don't necessarily care if Rock knew.  I'm not sure if that's what set Will off either and it doesn't totally justify his actions, I've seen the incident framed as a culmination of Rock jokes at their expense, but it would make it more understandable to me.

If you're on Will Smith's side in this I question your mental stability.

The medical condition is alopecia though. Hair loss. Like over 1/5 women have it at some point. Will just finally had enough with everyone making fun of him and his wife and their relationship so he decided to assault a 150 pound 60 year old comedian on national tv. Not how I would’ve handled it but oh well, just say you were defending your wife’s honor or some bullshit, then bring up god and 50% of America will apparently be ok with it.

is it the live on national tv part that's giving you guys a hard time? because getting open hand slapped is exactly what you should expect when you go after someone's wife's medical condition.

It’s a condition that makes your hair fall out. It’s not rough ridin' cancer. Smith is a bitch because he did that in a situation where he was protected and knew rock wouldn’t expect it. It was a cheap shot. The worst that would have happened is he’s hauled off by security. Ridiculous that he wasn’t hauled out of there.

Will isn’t mad a Rock anyway. He’s mad at himself and prob his wife for stepping out on him, but of course took her back like the baby back bitch he is.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

she's been public with it for like a year. chris rock produced a documentary (Good Hair) specifically about black people's hair. if it's true that the joke was written ahead of time then he was certainly aware.

Chris Rock is a comedian being paid to go up and roast a couple of celebrities with jokes he probably didn't even write for the Oscars event. The celebrities are all very well aware that some jokes are going to be told at their expense, and that they are more likely to be victims if they are nominated for something. It happens every year.

No it's the part where it's the Oscars and the entire premise is that the COMEDIAN host roasts celebrities in between awards.  If you're a multi-millionaire celebrity who can't mentally handle a slight ribbing from a comedian then maybe don't go to a place where you know a comedian will be ribbing celebrities.  It's not like some guy shouted something to her in a wal-mart parking lot.

i take back the 'did they know?' question because it doesn't even matter. she's laughing about it and sharing to the world here, which is great. while i don't find it all that funny, a GI Jane joke is so tame. it's not even mean.

This. Chris Rock is a professional. Kudos to him for handling it so well.

If one more person says medical condition, I’m going to lose my rough ridin' mind. If she had cancer, you’d just say cancer but you can’t because she just has hair loss and that’s lame and you know it so you say “medical condition”

I have hair loss and I do not like jokes about it either.
