Re: The KU/KSU rivalry
« Reply #150 on: April 03, 2011, 04:10:16 PM »
Does anyone else think that it's gotten unhealthy?  As KU fans, we expect to win, and when we don't, it's a huge disappointment.  It's a lose/lose situation for us.  As for K-State fans, they have grown increasingly hostile towards KU over the past several years.  Their hatred towards KU just gets deeper and deeper as time goes on.  There was a day when fans like sonofdaxjones were the exception to the rule.  Now it seems like most K-State fans fall into that category.

I don't know... maybe I'm wrong, and maybe it's just the fact that K-State basketball has improved to a level where they can compete with KU from time to time, but it just seems like the rivalry is more unhealthy than ever, especially when it comes to K-State fans.  I remember a time on this board when we had around a dozen or so really quality K-State posters, and now that number is probably less than three or four.  Has anyone else noticed this, and if so, what are your thoughts?

Because they have douchey fans who make threads like this, just to start crap.

I wonder if Nubb will make a dvd of their upset win over #2 Texas.

I wonder if Bill will buy it so he can learn how to beat Texas.

Huh?

How many players leave that shithole Lawrence to explore professional careers early?  :users:

Just heard on the radio that the KU barnstorming tour will be in Wichita soon.  Guess Reed, Morningstar, and Little will be playing some WSU kids that I've never heard of before.

It is cool Cole, Xavier and Mario came back today.

HOWEVER.

Paul Pierce does not come back to Lawrence very often if at all.  He also has given zero dollars to the university despite making millions.  I love Paul.  Went to school with him and have rooted for him his entire career.  But to pretend he is a "Lawrence guy" is either disingenuous or an outright lie.

He has a condo at the new Oread Hotel, and he was just in Lawrence this past year, squawk.

 :dubious:

Last Wednesday: (mostly paraphrasing...but close enough)

KU Fan to Lew Perkins:  Why don't former KU players donate more money to the university?  I've heard from multiple people that hardly any former KU players donate anything back after they leave.  You would think that the opportunity to play in an historic place like Allen Fieldhouse would make them appreciate the school more and want to give back. ( )  They're making millions because of KU ( :barf: ) why don't they all give back $100k/year or something?

Lew: It's not just a KU thing.  Most former players don't give back any significant amount to their universities.  It's especially bad at KU because of Roy Williams.  I was told when I got here not to even bother contacting any former players about donations.  They're off limits.  Roy told them all that they didn't have any responsibility to give back once they left because they gave enough while they were here.  I've talked to Paul Pierce a few times and he's a good guy, but he's not interested in donating back to KU at all.  He's never even come back to campus.  Not once since I was there.

Me:

Ben is just plain pathologic lately.  Kinda hard to believe anything he says anymore.  Do we have verification that Ben is even his real name?

Pierce hadn’t been back to Lawrence since the school retired his jersey in 2003. The years passed, and Pierce became something of a legend in Boston. He led the tradition-rich Celtics to the NBA title in 2008, winning NBA finals MVP in the process.

The relationship between NBA All-Star and his school was never strained, but Pierce became something like a successful family member who falls out of touch for a few years.

Former KU center Scot Pollard tells stories about spending time with Pierce as a teammate in Boston. Sometimes, Pollard says, he would ask Pierce why he never returned to Lawrence.

“Man there’s nothing for me there,” Pollard remembers Pierce saying. “Coach (Roy) Williams recruited me, and that was who my coach was and people don’t really care.”

Article is clearly pure fabrication guys.  Ben has seen Paul in Lawrence plenty of times.  Heck, Paul comes back so often that he owns real estate in Lawrence.

Ben is a nice poster but his history of lying is incredibly well documented.

Basically, Pierce hated Lawrentucky so much he had to be dragged back kicking and screaming.

And was Ben really lying? To people like him (:opcat:), "they" all look alike, you know.

Aside from the wacky ending ... the main storyline had to be the return of Pierce, who after winning 44 games against no losses in Allen during his three-year KU career, brought his A-game Saturday.

“I do remember at halftime, he said, ‘Look I’ve never lost a game in here. I don’t want to experience one,’’’ Blue team coach Larry Brown said.

“Now I’m 55-0-1,” Pierce said, his math off just a bit.

The 33-year-old Pierce said he had a blast during his weekend stay in Lawrence.

“It’s fun to be here around my old teammates and reflect on my memories,” Pierce said. “When I got here (at 3 p.m., Friday) I walked the campus, saw some of my old classes and where I stayed, saw some of the new things they’ve added on. It brought back a lot of memories. I was glad I was able to come back.”

He said he felt honored Self — who hosted a party for the former players Friday night — invited him back for the weekend.

“I didn’t hesitate to tell him, ‘Yes,’’’ Pierce said. “It was a no-brainer. I’ve been wanting to come back. I wanted to get back this year for basketball camp. It didn’t work out with my schedule.

“I mentioned to coach I think we should have something like this again to where we get together. This is a family type program. The guys that come back ... they stay in touch. I still stay in touch with Ryan Robertson. I talk to Mario (Chalmers, in NBA). We have that relationship because we are Jayhawks. It’s beautiful. Other schools don’t do this around the country to where guys come back. This is a special place. Coach said any time we can, come back. I plan on coming back a lot more than I have in the past. You don’t truly realize how special this place is until you step back away from it and you see it again. It’s unbelievable.”

Self said he noticed Pierce wipe away a tear during the pre-game video introductions of all the players.

Pierce seemed to really enjoy a ‘Pop-up’ video played during the second half, which delighted the sellout crowd of 16,300. The video showed Pierce hoisting the 2008 NBA championship trophy after he was named MVP against the Lakers.

“It’s the same, it’s just a lot louder,” Pierce said of the fieldhouse today compared to his playing days (1996-98). I was on the bench and could barely hear coach Brown in the timeouts. It was that loud. “I told coach Self I’d have stayed four or five years in school if it was like this in ‘95,” Pierce added with a laugh, referring to the fieldhouse improvements that came after the title victory in ‘08. “They have all the amenities I’m sure the players all enjoy, thanks to Mario.”
