In summation, stars do matter - statistically.
Honestly, when you're looking at top tier talent and difference makers, you're most definitely going to see that kind of correlation. But what about the other 220ish picks in the draft?
When we were racking up eleven win seasons, we were getting a bunch of mid-to-late round picks. It was the sheer number of kids we were getting drafted, period, that was an indication of depth.
I don't disagree with what you put forward at all. When you're looking at the cream of the crop in a draft class, it probably will be one of the top 250 kids that are ranked four stats and higher coming out of high school. But when you're looking at assembling a winning football team, you need depth in addition to those playmakers. That's where the three stars come in.
Snyder was 100% correct when he said they messed up when they were going after the four and five star kids. They were striking out way too much at the end of the DOD, and they didn't have any back up plans. What he's assembling is a roster full of solid-to-good, and that's enough to win us a lot of games and give the next coach a solid foundation to work from.
