CU fan goes too far with Jamar Samuels
As if losing on an overturned buzzer-beater wasn’t disappointing enough, a Colorado fan sent Jamar Samuels home from Coors Events Center for the final time with a rude farewell.
As the junior forward was walking to the visitor’s locker room at the conclusion of Saturday’s game, a fan loudly insulted Samuel’s mother. K-State coach Frank Martin said the slight was over the line.
“For some fan to talk about his mom is completely uncalled for,” Martin said. “Give me that guys number. I’ll go show him to talk about some guy’s mom.”
How did Samuels, who has an extremely close relationship with his mother, react? He was upset at first, but left Boulder composed.
“He’ll be fine,” Martin said. “He had more composure than me, because I would have been in the stands ripping someone’s head off. Colorado has got good people here. I’m not going to put a cloud over Colorado fans because there is one ignorant human being in the stands. But it’s unfortunate.”
A K-State spokesperson said the fan was interviewed by campus security, and his information was reported to Colorado athletic officials.
Samuels did not speak with the media after Saturday’s 58-56 loss, but Rodney McGruder said Colorado fans took a mean-spirited approach the whole game.
“I really don’t pay attention to the fans, but a few of my teammates said the fans were rough,” McGruder said. “So I believe that they were.”
Martin ended by saying he was proud of the way Samuels handled the ordeal.
“Our team pulled him out of there,” Martin said. “He got out of there and didn’t create a scene. He was upset in the locker room. That’s what the locker room is for. He handled it a lot better than if someone had talked about my mom.”
