I feel like gottleib doesn't fit into any of the 3 established categories.

Oh, I agree. Close games aren't that important, but I do think that some coaches are much better at them than other coaches.

So in the Big 12, who's good and who's bad?

Is there a category for super obvs, yet unadmitted, EMAW'ers who are super awesome and are fantastic on twitter?  If not, then yes.

category Gosh I would love too, it's my dream really, but I am afraid of failing and getting ragged on by my peers but might agree to do it if I got kinda buzzed and you gave me a really amazing pep talk.

Good: Bill Self, Rick Barnes

Bad: Travis Ford

Everyone else is either somewhere in between or they haven't been around long enough to fairly evaluate.

I agree for the most part, but think coaching is key in the last few minutes.  Basically, this is burned into my head based on when we went from Wooly to Huggs.  That maybe an extreme example because Wooly was monumentally inept in those situations, but that is mainly my only concern x-o's wise

http://statsheet.com/mcb/coaches/compare?c1=bob-huggins&c2=chris-mack&c3=jim-wooldridge&c4=lon-kruger&remove=chris-mack

Wooly wins 49% of close games and Huggs wins 52%. I mean it's better, but that would MAYBE translate to one extra win a year. Wooly's problem was always shitty talent.

Yeah, the biggest indicator of success in those comparisons is blowout wins/losses. Good coaches don't get blown out very often at all and have a 75% or better winning %-age in blowout games. Close games matter a bit; win 55-60% of those and you are fine.

Yeah, but like I said, using the final score to determine whether a game is close or not is kind of like using points scored and allowed to determine who is good at offense and defense. Coaches who recruit good free throw shooters will not have many "close wins" because their teams will close games out at the free throw line. There really isn't a meaningful stat to determine who is good at close games, so I was using the eyeball test. Ford's numbers were surprising, though. Maybe I was wrong about him.

I wasn't aware that Cal had scraps?  Doesn't he pretty much get everyone and need every single guy he can get?

Food for thought:

Are Jankovich, Henson, and Underwood EMAW enough to take one for the team and turn down offers from Currie?

Hopefully Boyle will do the same and they'll have no choice but to offer Pearl or find some literal Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

Yeah, hopefully they all turn down the job so we can go get somebody who will actually succeed, like Hurricane.

Does anybody else (probably semi-racistly) think that maybe Hurricane would be able to convince Angel to stay?

Let's hope. Pearl might be hoping we really blow the hire so he can have the job for himself in 2 years.
