The beta version was available way before that and it came installed on Samsung phones. It wasn't official in the app store until 2013, but you could get it if you wanted it before that. I had it on a HTC DNA in 2012.

My one m9 has been solid.  I can't think of one thing that bugs me about it.  Updates from Sprint have been solid too, usually ahead of the curve.  I was cross shopping the m8, nexus, and i6. Didn't want the Samsung offerings because they are crap for support once you're a generation behind (ie use your phone for 8 months).

One thing that is driving me crazy about Swype is that it does not recognize my first name. So annoying.
