I tip better if I am on a date and don't want the girl to think I'm a cheap ass.  Otherwise I tip as little as possible, if at all.  Don't go to any one place often enough to be considered a "regular".

This thread is starting to depress me. If you go out, tip. Otherwise just stay home. You are making those around you uncomfortable because you are more concerned with pinching your pennies than having a good time. The pizza carry out thing, OK, fine. Don't tip. Whatever. But don't screw your bartender or waitress out of a couple of bucks because you'd rather put the money toward a PS3 game.

tip or stay home.

This is what I say. When someone tells me they're too poor to tip, then I tell them they are Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) for going out to eat or drink in the first place.

I tip really great at places I go to regularly. Def makes a difference. You get seated faster, you get salads/apps/bread or whatever faster and your drinks are better. But I realize that I'm paying a premium for that. And I don't mind. Because I really hate waiting. On anything.

Definitely agree. I love tipping more at places I'm a regular because 99% of the time I go there, my wife and I each get free drinks or a free appetizer. I'm saving more money than anyone in this thread who advocates not tipping. Dumbasses.

I never worked for tips, and I tip really well. :dunno:

I tip 20 percent plus whatever the change is to make it an even total.  $17.38??  I would tip 3.62.  $23.67?  I would tip 5.33.

It normally takes me 7 minutes to tip.

Rounded tips even when paying with debit/credit card?

maybe change to the opposite. ex... if 17.38 then round up to 18.00 and tip 3.60. seems much easier for everyone. no?

Some people feel really bad about the crappy things they do in life (you know, like having a dead body in their closet, etc.), and so they tip big as a way of easing their troubled conscience and feeling good about themselves.  I have a buddy who tips big in lieu of donating money to charity (probably still deducts it on his return anyway).  Don't let these people's psychological need of feeling better by tipping affect your decision-making in any way or inspire guilt in you for not having the same mental hang-ups as them.

I tip out of the guilt that the pizza guy can tell i'm baked. Just w/ the odor and all. So I tip generally to avoid bad karma or a call to the police from a bitter W.A.S.P. high schooler.

Man, I didn't realize that 3/4 of this board is poor and cheap.  Reason #1 zillion why I would never pak with you retards, the servers know your toothless faces by memory and likely give you shitty service.  Also-  wanna guess what would happen to the price of your favorite fatty mcgee burger @ Chilis if they had to pay the servers an extra $5/hr?  And what quality of service would you get from a person making minimum wage?  "Poor, cheap, and stupid.   It's goEMAW.com!!!"

I prefer to spit on them and then laugh as they slink back to their 79 pinto with a giant pizza sign on the roof.

maybe i don't go to the same places often enough that they remember me, but a lot of you are saying...if you tip well they will treat you better. But I usually tip on how I was treated while there. If i tip well on Sunday, and i go back in Wednesday, Some other jackoff is working and won't know I tipped well. So if you're not a frequent flyer, I don't see the need to overtip.

Disclaimer: I usually tip for most things deserving. I will also usually overtip a homely looking waitress, figuring she could use some sunshine in her day.
Sometimes I think of the Book of Job and how God likes to really eff with people.

You'd be surprised. Every time a waiter/waitress gets screwed on a tip, they show their coworkers the receipt and you can become hated quickly. We did this all the time when I used to bartend. For instance, if someone sat down that I didn't know but they screwed a coworker the previous week, the coworker will tell me, "I wouldn't kill yourself on them. They don't tip."

It's also to your benefit to treat managers/owners good. They are the ones who run the credit card slips at night and punch in the god-awful tips you leave. Most are able to recall exactly what you eat, when you ate it, the amount of your bill and how much you left.

Trust me — word gets around fast, both good and bad.

Nobody (well, maybe hemmy) is saying that they don't tip when they go out. Getting carryout is not the same as eating out. It's picking up food and then taking it home to eat with your own utensils, on your own dishes, with your own beverages. The services rendered for your meal just are not worthy of a tip.

Here's another one: How much do you tip for valet parking? I've only used it twice, and I tipped $5 both times. Is this too much, not enough, or about right?

I usually tip around $3 for valet.  $2 for the valet who hails my cab for me.  Tip $1 per bag brought to the room.  $5 for a cab.  $1 per drink ordered at the bar.  20% and round up for meals.  $1 for the guy at the hibachi station.

I do tip, I just think its dumb.

Not saying its easy, but its their job. I usually pick jobs where I get a lot of money and don't need tips to survive. By the way, I would be happy if the waiter would GTFO and I just tell the cook what I want.

i always have a struggle with that one.

Valet only gets $3, but that's only because I am providing them a service. I always put on a great Springsteen song that I think they will enjoy.

You incorrectly assume that everyone "picks" their job.
