Got some from the MExican Sunfresh off of 70, really liked them.   Where can I pick up good ones for home use?

Go to the Mexican neighborhood.  Also, pick up some homemade tortillas while you're there.   :lick:

If you ever find yourself near Bonner Springs, they have a small joint named Freseros(or something like that).  Very good authentic tamales.  They sell them to go by the dozen($14 or so).

They make them once a week and freeze them.   The lady that works there says they are similar to gumbo in that they are better after they are frozen and that the immediately freeze all that they make.  I gotta believe her because theirs are pretty good.

Don't know if you had tried them before the they went out of biz, but I compare them to California Taquria(SP) that used to be at Chavez and SW Blvd in KC about 5 or 6 yrs ago.(my prev fav place for tamales).

I love tamales.

My folks get loads of them from real, live, Mexicans in Topeka.  The annual Mexican Fiesta in Topeka is a great place to get them.

In the KC area, I haven't found a retail outlet to get them in bulk.

Tienda Casa Paloma in Overland Park used to have some really incredible Vera Cruz style tamales (wrapped in banana leaves, not corn husks) that you could buy in bulk. It's changed owners, and is now called Gavinos, but I think it's owned by the folks that used to cook there.

This thread reminded me I have neglected trying their tamales since the ownership change. Will try, ask about pre-made bulk tamale purchases, and report back.

nothing strikes me as more funny than a bunch of pasty white kansas people trying to talk tamales and act like they really like them when in fact everybody knows that they are not very good and only people trying to pose as enjoying mexican food to the fullest pretend like they are. what a joke. all the real fans are laughing at you guys.

i've never seen anyone quite take their desire to carry out a ruse this far. congrats i guess. still doesn't change the fact that tamales are not good and that you are just pretending to like them and in fact have probably never even eaten one. the things people will do for mexican food cred these days, i swear.

true story- just did some research on what's in tamales.  not sure i will like them.  odds are i might not, i would estimate on a scale of 1-10 that the chance i like them is a 2.  i do not like masa and apparently masa is inside of a tamale with the meat and sauce and chilis.

YEAH, you would not like if you don't like masa.

One of my aunts made some chicken tamales this year at X-mas.  They were okay, I guess, but WTF was she thinking?  Surprised that crap was even allowed.

Love tamales, just not sure why my aunt decided to make chicken ones after making pork ones for like the last...well, my entire life.  It would be like if my other aunt decided to switch up her mole recipe.  But mole would deserve it's own thread...
