The same thing happens all the time: Media report announces University X will hire Coach Y. Coach Y responds and calls the report "untrue" and "inaccurate." Two days later, Coach Y is introduced as the head coach at University X.

In Patterson's case, everything except the last part happened. Likely because there was never a deal in place. If Patterson would kill a deal over a report that didn't even come from the university, then odds are he never truly wanted to come to K-State to begin with.

why would you doubt that any of it came from wefald? the guy was the president of the university at the time and heavily, heavily involved in athletics.

i would say that....patterson wanted it kept quit, wefald blew it up, patterson denied (which he had to) and was pissed at the administration of ksu for letting this get out, after the patterson denial wefald was able to sneak snyder right back in and a good majority of the fanbase was happy because patterson had already said "no" publicly. snyder gets to coach again and make tons more money (which he obviously wants) and wefald goes out on a high note with one of "his guys" back in charge. seems very plausible. just don't know if fitz was an active party or a pawn. can someone with gopowercat access ask him for me?

Patterson knew he had a good thing going at TCU. He had a damn good roster and a better QB (Dalton) than he'd be able to recruit to K-State. Bill himself said the program was "in flux" when he took over. Surely Patterson was smart enough to see that.

If he wasn't, then he could at least see that the athletic department was in shambles.

What makes this case unique is that Fitz actually had the details of the contract. It's not often that the media announces that Coach Y will work for University X and has a contract for Z dollars over N years. There had to either be some truth to that report, or Fitz is just much better at spinning yarns than anyone gives him credit for.
