FIRST ANNUAL goEMAW.com DR. SADLER TICKET GIVEAWAY CONTEST!!!!!
« on: February 15, 2010, 06:38:11 PM »
EMAWers,

It is with really big pleasures that I announce this once-in-a-lifetime event...your chance to win ELITE section 17 seats for Wednesday's game against Doctor Kenneth Sadler's Nebraska basketball team.

PRIZE:  Trim's two tickets, in the 8thish row of Section 17.

HOW TO WIN:  To enter, you'll need to reply in this thread with your rendition of what you believe will be Doctor Kenneth Sadler's obituary.  The only thing we ask, is that if you win, you definitely go to the game...Trim's old lady is going to be watching the game on TV, and if no one shows in those seats "questions will be asked."

Godspeed.

... and we're off!!!

Hint: I'll be partial to any obit featuring "grinder" discussion.  Don't feel restricted to just text.

Also, our gracious benefactors did some seat-shuffling to ensure the winner could get 2 tickets and bring a guest.  But, if you know you'd be going solo, mention that in your post.  Perhaps there can be 2 winners of 1 ticket each.  :dunno:  Whoever goes will also have the opportunity to meet goEMAW dignitaries Mr.KK, ksu_FAN, and giant pak head.

As Trim pointed out, we will accept photoshop and video submissions.  And, I know this won't be popular with all of you, but we WILL open this up to poems again.  This is a HUGE poetry board, FWIW.

Kenneth "Doc" Sadler
June 12, 1960 - February 17, 2010

Kenneth Sadler, often called "Doc," though research indicates he held no advanced degree of any form, passed away in the visitor's lockeroom in Bralamge Coliseum, in Manhattan Kansas.  Mr. Sadler was renowned for his fiery pre-game speeches and solid, if not predictable, coachig strategies.  At the time of his death he was reported to have been drawing up a particularily clever backdoor screen when he realized his players were watching a youtube clip of the final seconds of the 2009 Big XII football championship game on Senior Ryan Anderson's iPhone.  Mr. Sadler earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas where he was a student assistant under the legendary Eddie Sutton.  Sadler was able to gain many of Sutton's techniques of coaching while avoiding any crippling narcotic addictions.  Though struggling through a difficult season at 1-9 in the Big XII conference, Sadler's team was always a tough out with its gritty play, can-do attitude, good practice habits and refusal to let bad calls or injuries destroy its spirit.  Most observers readily offer that his team was just a few years away from posting a NCAA tournament win, which would be the first in the Husker's proud basketball history.  Sadler is survived by his wife, 2 children and a cockapoo named Danny Nee.

Kenneth "Doc" Sadler passed away last Saturday at the age of 58 after a long battle with recruiting. Doc lived in Jonesboro where he has been an assistant coach at Arkansas State for the past 3 seasons.

Doc was born on June 12th 1960 to Charles Sadler and a two bit street walker. Charles raised Doc by himself saying "My kid will learn to do things the right way. The only way to make sure no corners will be cut is if I raise him myself". Doc earned a degree in Phsyical Education from the University of Arkansas. While at Arkansas Doc served as a team manager for LHC Eddie Sutton. Doc could often be seen the night before game day scouring all the watering holes in Fayetville trying to find out where Eddie and his degenerate son Sean had holed up for the night. When reached for comment about Doc's sudden death Sean Sutton said "This doesnt count as my one phone call does it"

Doc spent 10+ years working his way up through the coaching ranks before getting his big break. Billy Gilepsie hired Doc as an assitant coach/DD on a referral from Eddie Sutton. After Gilepsie left Doc guided the Miners to a NCAA tournament and the First of his many NIT berths before leaving for Nebraska and the Big12 conference.

Doc coached at Nebraska for 12 years reaching 7 NIT's. Doc embraced the "Solid Long Term Hire" strategy and lifted it to new heights with his strategy of recruiting borderline Division 1 prospects and redshirting them. His pinnacle of success came in 2017 when his Huskers won the National Invitational Tournament. When asked why he turned down an opportunity to participate in the more prestigious NCAA tournament Doc said "I'm building a program here! We dont cut corners! Some of these kids have been with me for 6 years, all they know is the NIT. Plus we are bound to play more games in the NIT than the NCAA. Thats how you build a program, by practicing more than everyone else!" In his last fits with dementia Nebraska Chancellor Tom Osbourne inexplicably fired Doc in 2019 saying "I like doc,doc doc doc, (incoherent ramblings), PPOOOOOOOPPPPPYYYYY".

Doc is predeceased by his wife Tonya, second wife Tashanda, and third wife Tonka. He leaves behind 6 children, Effort age 23, Determination age 20, Princess Girl age 16, Grinder age 12, Princess Girl 2 age 10, and his youngest son Redshirt age 3. Any donations can be made to the AAU team of your choice.

ESPN ANALYST "DOC" SADLER PASSES AWAY

Former Nebraska coach was hours away from calling an NCAA tourney game for the first time; now is relegated to the sordid long term fires?

March 12, 2025

DALLAS -- Long-time ESPN college basketball analyst and former Nebraska head coach Kenneth "Doc" Sadler passed away in Terminal A of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport this afternoon, moments after arriving in Dallas to prepare for his first-ever call of an NCAA tournament game for CBS on Thursday morning.  The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Sadler presided over a consistently uninspired period of 10 years as the Huskers' head coach.  This stretch was marked by 5 NIT appearances and no NCAA tournament appearances, even after the field was expanded to 96 teams in 2011 and then to 160 teams in 2014.  Following the 2016-2017 season, Sadler signed on as a studio analyst for ESPN, then became a color commentator for ESPN college basketball games beginning in 2020.

Sadler quickly became an audience favorite when he joined John Sciambi in 2021 as the broadcast team for ESPN's Big Monday games featuring the Big 16 Conference.  As a commentator, Sadler was known for his off-the-wall descriptors, the most famous of which was perhaps "grinder," which Sadler would use variously to describe a player, team, game, or the latest escort he had hired while on the road.

[VIDEO:  Sadler uses the term "grinder" 13 times in 2 minutes during broadcast of 2020 Big 16 tournament championship game between K-State and Houston.]

Sadler was often referred to as a "grinder" himself, known by friends and colleagues as a "guy who never took short cuts."  According to ESPN colleague Rich Zvosec, Sadler passed up an earlier opportunity to begin calling NCAA tournament games for CBS because he "wanted to perfect his approach before taking on such a big responsibility--he wanted to get there the right way."  In the end, this perfectionism cost Sadler his opportunity to return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since his very first year as a head coach at UTEP.

Great job, slimz.

Let's keep the entries coming.  Perhaps some crouching/arthritis-in-the-knees cause of death talk?

Doc was a good sloth, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors... and camaro iroc z’s, and as a sloth he explored the courts of the midwest, from Fort Smith to El Paso and... up to... Lincoln. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Boulder, at Ames, at College Station. These young men gave their lives. And so would Doc. Doc, who loved slothing. And so, Kenneth Doc Sadler, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Devaney Center, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.

Just back from the game.

Thanks for the tickets, KK & Trim.  Great job with the giant pak head, KK.

Thanks to FAN for hanging out.  Felt good to get part of the old front row crew from the Wooly days back together, and to sit with the originator of OOD.  Although all the autograph requests did get kind of annoying.

Finally, thanks to "Doc" Sadler for a game that was much more memorable than it should have been.  Years from now, when I'm listening to Doc analyze games on ESPN, I will look back to the days of infancy of the OOD and will fondly remember Doc's oversized suit jacket flapping back and forth as he turned this way and that, Doc's perfect technique in slamming the ball to the ground, and Doc's attempt to stare a hole right through the referee's head.
