personally, i was a complete pussy when younger (just like you above in lots of similar situs).  but i've gotten a lot more violent as i've aged.  really regret not fighting more when i was young and in shape.

If you play with him a lot you'll have plenty of opportunity to be macho. Just keep laughing at his ridiculous threats and next time invite him to go ahead and try to knock you to ground. Be sure to keep a low center of balance though when goes for it!

You did the right thing all the way up until you approached him and apologized.  He looks like a complete fool until you validate him by making him think he was in the right.

So, today, I almost got into the first fight of my basketball playing "career".

There's an older (50-ish) guy, who I think was a high school coach, that is about 5-10, 160, and is really a fantastic player for his age.  The only problem is he is a loaf-coach.  He never plays defense, but yells over anyone else's missed defensive assignment.  He also has this remarkable knee injury that only effects him on the defensive end.

Anyway, I'm about 6-2, 210 or so, and got a o-reb, pretty much by myself under the basket.  I he hustles in to grab my arm, and then another guy comes in and starts hacking.  I'm generally of the belief that non-shooting fouls shouldn't be called unless they cause a turnover, so I just kind of wait for them to stop hacking - they don't, so I try to pull away, saying something like, "seriously, guys." and apparently catch Miracle Knee with an elbow in the process.  He's all, "Call the f*cking foul instead of calling elbows next time, or I'll take you out!".  I, of course, literally LOL @ this idea, and he says, "I'm f*cking serious!  I'll knock your ass to the ground."  Since I'm very non-confrontational in real life, am a grown up, and play w/ this guy 3 times a week, I just say, "whatever, let's play."

After the game, I apologize, and we shake hands.

Now I'm worried I wasn't macho enough.  :dunno:

should have eff bombed the dude.  who cares if he is old and wounded.

it's very hard for native kansans to start a fight.  you'll probably have to just insult him very aggressively and hope he takes a swing at you.  once he gets the action started you'll be fine.

Hell of a thread.

Ever get into a game without a point guard against a team that throws the full court press at you?

Losing by 98 points isn't a whole lot of fun, but at least we got the moral victory of not losing by 100.

Woops, had a  :cyclist: moment there -- that was one of those rec league games.  Our pg bailed on us last second, so we had to put a chucker in at the point.  The other team wisely pressed the entire game.  I think we probably set a record for turnovers in a game.

Worst pickup loss was probably more like 50 points against a group of football players.  Can't remember who it was, but one of them wouldn't even run back on defense - just stayed at the offensive end, waiting for us to miss, have one of his teammates rebound it, throw it crosscourt to him, then he could dunk it at his leisure.  My two shining moments in that game were:

1. a block of one of his ridiculously quick/strong/big teammates and
2. me NOT fouling said cherry picker thereby NOT giving him the 3-point play, which he was angling for on one of his myriad dunk attempts.  Suck it, cherry picker.

Used to play against a guy that played OL for Washburn for a couple seasons. I have a tendance to run over folks when driving the lane in pugs. Tried it on him one time and bout ended up losing a few teeth.  Brick wall. And I'm not small(6'-5"/280lbs).
Learned quickly to go around linemen when playing BB.

Had the exact same experience with Justin Swift on Clams' team he spoke about above.  Trying to body people is a lost cause.  Best to just slash and bomb 3s.

I'm best at one thing in pick-up games, and that's immediately identifying the most unathletic/lazy person on the other team and shouting "I got him/her."
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."
