Like I always say, as someone who spent hours in Ahearn back in the day, and knowing that it has only received significant renovation to things like the V-ball dressing rooms, the V-ball offices, and had the indoor track redone a couple of times . . . it's still a craphole, which would require tens of millions of dollars of work before it could host any basketball games or be turned into a suitable basketball practice facility. This is why I laugh at people who say, "lets play a game in Ahearn" . . . sure, and fire officials would maybe allow 6 or 7,000 people tops to attend, and they'd have to spend well into the 6 figures just to get the placed square away to host one basketball game with 6 or 7,000 people there.
The window to renovate Ahearn was when everyone was hellbent on a new arena. The $18.5 million spent on Bramlage in mid 1980's dollars could have done one hell of a renovation on Ahearn. The biggest issue was that Ahearn would have had to have been completely shut down for over a year. Because of its design they couldn't do a "pop the top" deal on it, and kept right on holding games like OSU did to GIA.
