Got my brother a Vintage Wagner - Sidney cast iron skillet, and got my parents an Anova precision cooker today
in keeping with the theme of this thread- if you're looking for a good book to go with the sous vide, check out thomas keller's Under Pressure, or Modernist Cuisine at Home.  i bought clams gf an anova last year for Christmas and packaged it with Keller's book.  both are good learning material as most people don't really know a lot about sous vide cooking.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

I've given car repair as a gift before.  Felt great doing that.

I got Modernist Cuisine - Pricey, but invaluable if you sous vide often.  I also pressure cook so it has ideas there too.  Also, vacuum sealer is a good gift pairing.

Do you have the TK book?  I've looked at it but am a little worried that everything will require restaurant equipment (beyond Sous Vide) or ridiculously hard to source ingredients and not really practical to a home cook.

I haven't gotten one of the books, just used ChefSteps, Modernist Cusine and Serious Eats websites to pretty good effect thus far. Sounds like one of the books still be worth it at this point?

Parents already have a vacuum sealer, but it's next on my list of kitchen gadgets to acquire.
:adios:

i thought that the keller book was more approachable than modernist so that's what I bought. and ya along with the sous vide and the tk book, I also gave her a good vacuum sealer, good call.  found a great one at Costco. another accompanying gift w sous vide is a kitchen torch.

I got FreundinSonntag a vacuum... like, i'd already got her some thing but she said "I want a vacuum" and then there was one on sale.

I was planning on giving her a vacuum and only that at first then being like "naaaaaa heres your presents"

How long should i wait between these two events?  I was thinking just for like any normal exchange of gifts period, but, i thought about just like waiting a day or something.  You know, really sell it?  Thoughts?

So I was looking on the B&N site to see if there was like a "Turning 18 for Dummies" book that would give some tips on what to do when you turn 18...register with selective service, register to vote, etc....

And these are the results that came up...
