So the republicans already have nearly 30% of the Hispanic vote despite every effort to lose it? That is pretty good, if you ask me. Maybe they should stop villainizing immigration so they have a chance at winning that demographic.
The Hispanics that have immigrated to the US legally over many years are for the most part opposed to abortion and illegal immigration, and are proud of their accomplishments.
Exactly. If the republicans would just work to make it easier to get into the US legally, then they would gain votes. Why don't they do that? It would be good for the US economy and just the right thing to do in general.
Um, many Republicans are working to make it easier to get into the United States. But, because they actually want, you know, a process. A process that, you know, makes sense, and still leans heavily towards actually protecting our borders and thus our national security. Many are labeling them . . . because they aren't all in on just throwing open the gates and letting anyone walk in and pretty much do whatever they want. Particularly knowing that they're walking in from countries and through countries which are basically banana republic hell holes filled with really, really bad people who are trying to export their badness into this country and who may be doing business with other really, really bad people.
But hey, it looks like this administration prefers chaos, upheaval and crisis. Never let a good crisis go to waste . . . amirite?
How long have they been working on it and what progress has been made? At what point do we just assume that they don't really care about the issue and are just using it as a campaign talking point?
If you'll recall, they almost had it under Bush, but it fell apart because they made the mistake of not requiring true border security before the other provisions kicked in, and true border security was more difficult to ensure than it is now.
Significant advances in technology - drones - now make it possible to provide much more accurate and comprehensive surveillance of the southern border, and this security can be paid for by guest worker permits (ideally, the proceeds from the permits would be divided between the Feds and the states where the permits are granted to help pay for both the enhanced border security, employee ID verification, and welfare usage). However, this isn't going to happen again until the stars align for Republicans to retake the House, Senate, and WH. Why? Because no "compromise" with Dems will
ever include true border security. That would defeat their objectives.
