Most of the rural post offices in this area (Cuba, Haddam, Axtell, etc.) have already cut down their operating hours to two hours a day.
Good god, where do you live? Rated X at Summerfield much?

Most of them are closer to Marysville or Concordia than they are Manhattan. Google maps, do you use it?

Here's a tip for you arm-chair USPS consultants: it has way less to do with who gets what delivered where and when, and way more to do with Congress declaring that the USPS has to pre-fund retiree health benefits.

Eliminating this requirement would save the USPS almost three times more money annually than eliminating Saturday delivery. Congress requiring the pre-funding retiree health benefits (which is extremely rare, I believe the USPS is the only govt entity that is required to do it) is what is killing the USPS, not Granny Engelbert getting her Ladies' Home Journal every week out in Axtell.

In other Cliff Clavin-related news, if any of you want to check out a podcast on the history of the USPS, there's a good one here:

I went to a houes party in Haddam one summer night when I was in college.
I have only driven through Cuba on a few occasions.
I was just in Axtell for a baseball tourney last summer. We used to play them in baseball when I was a kid. Know several people in the area. Grandma Englebert moved away years ago.

Here is what I know about KCFDcat:

1) He just paid cash for a house.
2) He is opening a brewery that he can run while remaining a full time firefighter.
3) He is underpaid.

The USPS is a relic that I hope never goes away. The small town post offices are the best thing about it, too.

Not only do they have to pre-fund retirement benefits, the are pre-funding retirement benefits projected for the next 75 years in a 10 year span as mandated by the Congress in 2006. Curious, isn't it? Unprecedented is an understatement.

What it is, is a manufactured crises by a bunch of shills who want the postal service to fail so it can ultimately be privatized. If that happens, it will be interesting to see what happens to that pension fund.
