Possession based stats visualization
« on: February 20, 2014, 12:18:55 PM »
A few simple little charts that show the value of possession based stats. These only compare season stats of "points per game" and "points per possession" on offense and defense for Big 12 teams. A national comparison or comparisons of other stats (TOs, rebounds, etc.) would show even more. Points per game still seems to be the standard for most commentators though, so IMO its a good example.

BTW, these are raw points per possesion numbers, not kenpom's adjusted numbers.

Man, when was the last time Kansas wasn't 1 or 2 on Def. PPP in confy?

2011, 2nd behind Texas and before that, 2005 behind ISU and OU. Top 3 in the Big 12 every season going back to 2003.

I included the national ranking because the differnence between where teams rank in PPP and PPG is often ridiculous. Yet, I bet when we play Texas Tech next week we'll here someone talk about the match-up of "the Big 12's two best defensive teams".

what a fun coincidence that kstate's defense is pretty much the same ranking for ppg vs ppp. its like that one temperature that is the same in farenheit and celsius.

Wow.

perhaps even more shocking is Wayne Morgan had the best defense in the Big 12 in 2005. And he returned everyone and went 10th in D the very next year.

Yes. Slow teams often get equated with being good on defense because of ppg, and it isn't always the case.

We need more points

One of the things that frustrated me about last night. . .we could have easily bumped up our average a bit. . .at least get into the seventies.  Instead. . .we made it worse.  PPG is one of those odd stats that is supposedly "so telling" about our team. . .it's almost. .dare I say. . Big 10 ish.

Looking at that chart, I'm not sure that the oddsmakers can hang the total low enough...

I don't care about ppg, but our efficiency is not good. Terrible TO% being our biggest issue.
