The Ivies have started to use their large endowments to pay for lower income students. 

This not so current article http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/23/sports/financial-aid-changes-game-as-sports-teams-in-ivies-rise.html makes it sound like a sliding scare from free for those with a family income under $65k to full tuition at $180k.  I believe Semi's dad is a physician, so they may not qualify for a grant at all.

The Ivies also have bullshit minimum entrance requirements that don't apply to the general student population. IIRC it blocked a Philadelphia public school player from attending Penn not too long ago.
