So these last 2 years, the red carpet was basicly rolled out for KU to make the Final 4. Last year they could have made the title game without playing a seed lower than an 8. This year they get 3 double digit seeds and then catch the break where a 1 seed loses a player who is top 5 in the country when it comes to his importance to the team
This year KU overachieved. Everyone knows it. Them going 16-2 in the league and somehow getting into the title game was a very impressive feat. They did not play great in the tourney. They scored 65 or under in 5 of thier 6 games and had the lead about 5-6 minutes total in the Purdue Osu and UK games. They should never have made the national title...... but they were gutty, gritty, and found a way to play near flawless ball the final 4 minutes of games.
How frustrating is it today knowing that this year's team was so gutty, fought so hard when they were not playing well..... when last year's team was better and had a much easier final 4.....but last year's team took VCU for granite somewhat and lacked that toughness when they struggled offensively.
Im sure KU fans will end up loving this team a lot more than last year's team, and it's not because they made the title game. But because it's fun to have that team that overachieves and a team that somehow wills its way to a victory when they really should not have won the game. That said, if KU had not come in a little overconfident and took care of VCU..... they would have been the clear favorite in the Final 4.
At least things went almost perfectly the final 2 plus minutes back in 2008 vs Coach Cal. My bud who is KU fan said had they lost that game, it would be almost unbearable to be a KU fan. That's being over the top IMO, but his quote
