Military brat here. Growing up I lived in England and Guam. England was pretty awesome, we lived in the middle of nowhere so we were around a ton of historic locations. For instance the church in our village (pop. 2000) was built in the 1500s, that blows my mind something used every weekend could be so old. The cities are kinda shitty. Dumpy and full of western culture. Nothing special except for going to see a soccer game or the Westminster area of London. All the castles scattered throughout the country are amazing, and you can easily travel to Scotland and Ireland which are beautiful. You can also easily take trips to mainland Europe. Sometimes we'd take ferries over to France just because there was a coupon in the newspaper for a 40 pound ticket. Overall, England is great if you get out and travel through the small villages.
