How Bad is KU's Defense? - Near record breaking bad.
« on: October 09, 2011, 06:14:11 PM »
Near a pace to break a record for the worst defense in FBS history.  The record for most yards allowed per game is 553.0 by Maryland, 1993 (6,083 total yards yielded in 11 games.)

Total Defense
RankTeamGOpp PlaysOpp Tot YdsOpp Tot Yds/PlayOpp Off TDOpp Tot Yds/G

119New Mexico537326117.0030522.20
120Kansas535627807.8134556.00

Of course, teams that have played KU have had their best offensive games of the year so far:
TeamAgainst KUTot Yds/G
McNeese State420387
Northern Illinois462447
Georgia Tech768553
Texas Tech530524
Oklahoma State600577

Still to play:
TeamAvg Yds/G
Baylor562
Oklahoma534
Texas A&M493
Missouri478
Iowa State389
Texas388
K-State335

I think those top 4 schools (Baylor, OU, aTm, MU) will get more than 556 yds against KU.  Playing the last three could keep KU from the record books if they can keep them under 500 yds.

That number will change a lot when we run for 1000 against them.

The Phoggies are all over this already:

Quote
The Cowboys' eight drives for touchdowns in the first half averaged 84 seconds.

Quote
Another amazing stat -- KU was allowing .739 points PER PLAY prior to today.  Today, they allowed over 1 point per play.

For comparison, last year's KU men's basketball team gave up .91 points per "play", or defensive possession.

Quote
The worst D in FBS last season was Eastern Michigan, which gave up 7.4 yards per play.  The worst BCS team was Indiana, which gave up 6.7 yards per play.

Prior to today's contest, KU was giving up 8.5 yards per play.  They gave up 9.3 yards per play today, though as many have noted OSU was in the prevent offense most of the 2nd half.

Quote
The worst scoring defenses in history:

50.3/game Louisiana-LaFayette in 1997. East Carolina gave up 572 in 13 games in 2010.

We are at 55.8 and are ranked last by almost 13 pts/game.

and of course

Gundy had mercy on KU. Probably Stoops will too.

KSU and LHC Bill Snyder will not call off the dogs once the blowout starts. An 85-7 defeat will be a way for KSU to achieve a 5 or 6 year advantage in recruiting.

I read a quote somewhere that Opurum is now playing DE.

I think that kind of says it all.  RB turned LB turned DE.

When you pretty much only recruits RBs, some of them are gonna have to play DE.

From kusports.com
"Blow up Memorial Stadium... build a new stadium.... THEN hire Leach... this is going to take some major moolah.

I'll pass the hat around...everyone put in a couple bucks?"

I thought Memorial Stadium was the prize of Kansas collegiate football--you mean it's not?

Our defense last year gave up .42 points per play, which is pretty terrible.

KU's defense is currently giving up .69 points per play. So an opponent scores a touchdown on average against KU every 10 plays.

Against our defense this year an opponents scores a touchdown every 25 plays; our points per play is a very respectable .28.
