it's the same reason you see the head linesman and line judge run inside for every TD like that down near the endzone.  You can't signal TD until one of the officials identifies that the ball is in possession of the offense.  That is a mass of humanity and it's difficult to see much of anything from the sides in those situations and the two officials on the sides have that call because they are best aligned with the advancement of the ball.  Just a fyi.
