Week 1 was a dark one for Auburn football. Even with the fact out there that Utah State almost beat Oklahoma last season, and Texas A&M the season before(?), they were not suppose to challenge the mighty Auburn Tigers in their first game since winning the NC, Cam or not.
However, Utah State ROLLED Auburn. Dominating Auburn from beginning to end, in all phases of the game. Up 38-28 with 4mins left in the game, Utah State was cruising to a victory and literally let up on the gas. Auburn scored a TD with about 2mins left and then coverted the easiest on-side kick in the history of the game. It was inevitable then that Auburn would score a TD with 30secs left and pull out the 42-38 win. I really felt bad for the Utah State fans that made the trip, as they deserved that win, just as their team did.
And the reason for Auburn's dismal performance? Ted Roof. Get ready for a season of me cursing his name, as he is Auburn defensive coordinator. If not for some miracle of 10 mysterious quarters at the end of last season, I do not think he would have a job right now. Auburn played incredible defense when it mattered most, starting in the second half vs Alabama last season. Beforehand though, Auburn's defense was a joke. We sit back and watch plays develop, play 15 yards off all coverage and don't pressure the qb at all.
Fairley would bail us out last season, but no one on this current defense is an impact player. Bubble screens are a routine first down and running backs only have to go around the tackle to find daylight.
Our fans would tell you about how we have a lot of youth on defense. I call that an excuse, as everyone turns over in college football. I will also point out that we allowed a TRUE freshman qb to completely shred us up and down the field. Others will point out how our last coach left the cupboard bare in terms of recruiting. So bare that we won a NC last season?
Auburn looks to have a long season in front of them. Our next opponent is Miss St. They put up 600+ yards of offense last week. I don't care who they played, that's a lot of offense. We get them at home, but if we play D against them like we did Utah State, we are going to get our faces fuckstarted in a very harsh way.
