The media is so Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) when they try and talk about the "business" side of college basketball.  They act like the NCAA has no choice but to let big "programs" slide because they make all the money for the NCAA.  The NCAA wouldn't miss a nickel if UConn fell off the face of the planet tomorrow.  They need a new schtick, this one is tired and worn out.  I'm surprised he didn't drop a line about how those evil corporations probably control the matter.

I do like how the writer made clear to point out the Jones is "African American".  I mean, he didn't say it, but he alluded to it, if Jones was NOT African American he wouldn't have missed a game.

Good column. Good writer. I hate Baylor too, but Jones' punishment was unfair especially considering the NCAA did nothing to Cam Newton.

It is interesting how the NY Times always uses N.C.A.A. and not just NCAA.  Not sure of many other publications that do that.

people are so stupid re. newton.  he wasn't punished because the ncaa could uncover no evidence that he was paid.  evidence that his father solicited money, but no evidence that anyone ever delivered.  should kstate be punished for mitchell's mother?  should missouri?

It is interesting how the NY Times always uses N.C.A.A. and not just NCAA.  Not sure of many other publications that do that.

NYT style is pretty much a holdover from antiquity. Most places dropped unnecessary titles too, but in every news story there will be Mr./Mrs. Smith etc. Formality is their thing.

Still fun to catch the rare grammatical error from them though. I think their editing line still runs 5-7 seats deep, which is pretty much unheard of these days.

No, but Mitchell should be. I don't think Auburn should be punished now, but Cam shouldn't have been allowed to play.
